EVAN ALMIGHTY - POSTER

May 31st 2007 14:41
A lot of people state Bruce Almighty is their favorite Jim Carrey film. What will they think about a similar film, the sequel Evan Almighty, but without Jim Carrey?

Probably that it's one of the best Steve Carell films they've seen. But just probably.

I'm worried that they'll go over the top and just make this whole thing ridiculous, instead of a fun "serious" comedy. I mean like this poster. Sure, it's amusing and all, but a bit too cartoonish.

WAR - POSTER

May 31st 2007 14:32
You're a martial arts fan? Or just enjoy movies where every other minute includes a kick in someone's arse? Then War is a movie you should look forward for.

Jason Statham and Jet Li are fighting each other to the point they can't possibly have any moves left. By the trailer, it looks entertaining though, so it might be worth renting or buying in DVD.

This new poster is hardly original, but I like to see how a guy with a lot of facial hair envies the one without.

TRANSFORMERS - NEW TV SPOT

More and more Transformers marketing material are coming out, the latest being a new TV spot. Now, there has been pretty many clips and spots before, which I didn't post since it'd become rather boring. This however, is very good-looking and somewhat original, so I guess it's worth it.

The Incredible Hulk

Even though I'm still traumatized after the awful experience of Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk, I can't help wanting this come back of the character. Especially knowing Edward Norton, Tim Roth and Liv Tyler are involved.

Now the synopsis of the film, The Incredible Hulk, is announced and here it is:

Upon returning to civilization, our brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination (Tim Roth) -- a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from total destruction. And on June 13, 2008, one scientist must make an agonizing final choice -- accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or the creature he could permanently become: The Incredible Hulk.

Sounds interesting enough if you ask me...

Louis Leterrier (Transporter) is directing it, so I'm sure there will be some nice effects, but I'm still a bit afraid of the story execution. But writer Jack Kirby is pretty experienced within this field, so there's no reason it should end up awful as well.

Iron Man Robert

Seriously, just when I thought it can't look any better, we get this on set footage that makes me wanna go over there and kiss the whole crew, and by "crew" I mean Gwyneth Paltrow.

I'm incredibly excited about Iron Man. Robert seems to be the perfect man to take on the role and I believe in Jon Favreau, even though he hasn't done anything enormous like this before. He's a talented guy.

Check out the costume of Iron Man and some more comments by Downey Jr. on it, if you've missed 'em.

RESCUE DAWN - POSTER

May 29th 2007 11:44
Werner Herzog, director of documentary Grizzly Man, is soon to release his new movie called Rescue Dawn.

It stars a thin Christian Bale and Steve Zahn, about a US Fighter pilot's epic struggle of survival after being shot down on a mission over Laos during the Vietnam War. [IMDB]

The estimated budget is $10million, so there might not be mind-blowing explosions, but it's still enough to make a good war movie.

I've seen Grizzly Man and Herzog has some potential, but I don't know what to expect at this moment. Anyway, the new poster is out for Rescue Dawn, which I think has some similarities to that of Grizzly Man as well.

I love when stuff like this come out, it's just incredibly amusing. At the same time I feel bad for the ones involved though. I'm sure you remember the fight between David O. Russell and Lily Tomlin.

Knocked Up poster
The big comedy to be released this year, Knocked Up, has gotten a lot of positive reviews and is expected to become a great success. We've already seen some clips and it looks nice.

A video somehow has gotten its way to the internet, where Michael Cera (Superbad) is supposed to play the main role, later given to Seth Rogen.

It shows Cera arguing with the director, Judd Apatow, and generally being arrogant. But he is wrong and we can all see that. This obviously/probably got him fired later on. Thankfully so, cause Seth Rogen owns this role.

Personally I think it is fake. To generate buzz or something. But it might not, and it's that small possibility that makes life wonderful.

STAR WARS: CLONE WARS - TRAILER

May 28th 2007 10:19
Clone Wars

For you that don't know about this, Star Wars will have its own animated tv-show called Clone Wars.

I don't think everyone are happy about this, but how could it hurt? I won't watch it, but the new generation might grow up with a whole different Star Wars than us.

Other than that, I don't like the animation style they decided to use. Looks rather cheap, I think.

Clone Wars take place between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. All in all, I believe they'll have a nice story and that kids will love it.

BABYLON A.D. - CLIP

May 28th 2007 10:05
I don't know if another Vin Diesel film will do the world any good, but sometimes you just get surprised.

Babylon A.D. is about Thoorop (Diesel) that takes the high-risk job of escorting a woman from Russia to China. But little does he know that she is host to an organism that a cult wants to harvest in order to produce a genetically modified Messiah. [IMDB]

A clip with some behind the scenes shots of Babylon A.D. is out, and even though it's impossible to get a grip of what's going on with all the explosions and awful music, it seems they've invested good money into this.

At least the story is somewhat original...

Finally a poster that is acceptable, unlike the previous one for 1408.

Of course if you got stars like John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in a film, it's like a rule to use them in the poster. And I'm glad they didn't do it over the top, just discretely enough, transferring a suspenseful vibe to get us excited...

NO AL CAPONE FOR NICOLAS CAGE

May 25th 2007 10:13
No Capone for Cage

A month or so ago it was reported that Nicolas Cage will play Al Capone in The Untouchables: Capone Rising, by Brian De Palma.

It seems now that Cage dropped out, because of so called scheduling conflicts, but I think he just wasn't fond of playing a young Al Capone. And he would be right, it'd be ridiculous.

It's a nice coincidence, because Matt Damon also stated he was done with the Bourne-flicks only yesterday.

Hollywood is adjusting itself.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets

I know that a lot of great movies are coming out this year, but I can't help but feeling most excited about National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

It's the sequel to National Treasure, about Benjamin Franklin Gates (Cage) who looks to discover the truth behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, by uncovering the mystery within the 18 pages missing from assassin John Wilkes Booth's diary. [IMDB]

I remember seeing the first one without any expectations whatsoever, on a boring day it seemed to be the only decent thing. I dragged some friends with me even though they felt it would be awful. When we got out of the theater they all thanked me.

True, it's a Disney film, but it's smart and adventurous (almost like Indiana Jones but not really). Hopefully the sequel will be that way as well. The story sounds good and so does the trailer.

NO MORE BOURNE FOR MATT DAMON

May 24th 2007 21:59
Damon Bourne Ultimatum

I guess I was right about Matt Damon thinking the Bourne series stink himself, because he stated in Cannes that he's done with them.

"I'm definitely done with that. I think we've ridden that horse as far as we can. The character lives on in the books and if someone else wanted to play it it, I guess they could", he said.

What can I say, it's certainly a smart carrier move and maybe it will profit the franchise as well. Like Daniel Craig did to Bond.

Bourne Ultimatum opens up August 3.

Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver are working with Mattel to turn He-Man and the Masters of the Universe into a live-action film.

It'll be written by Justin Marks and Silver will produce. I was never really liked He-Man, with that ugly haircut and all, but there are many who see him as a cult-figure.

The previous movie made, with Dolph Lundgren, didn't exacty turn out that well, so I'm quite sure they'll try to create something much better.

The visual style is said to be similar to that of 300, so who knows, maybe it'll kick ass!

I don't know how a sequel on a documentary about a specific topic is possible, but it seems like Paramount is interested and actually works on it as we speak.

Davis Guggenheim said in an interview with IESB:

I’m meeting with Paramount next week to talk about a sequel to Inconvenient Truth. Too early to talk about details.

I've seen Inconvenient Truth, and it's pretty good (just a bit overestimated), but a sequel would be totally wrong. From the topic "Al Gore trying to get president", it'll now be "Paramount desperate for money".

Paris Je T'aime

I saw Paris, Je T’Aime approx. two months ago and let me tell ya - best movie I've seen so far year 2007.

It's a must for everyone with some brains, not because of its complexity, but because of its deep emotions. I literally cried, and I don't do that a lot. It's the utter definition of romance, comedy, sadness and beauty.

It has several directors and contains different short stories, with the basic thread of love. Some of the directors are Wes Craven, Alexander Payne, the Coen Brothers and some of the stars include Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Elijah Wood.

You need to be able to read though, because it's mainly in French. Wonderful language and wonderful city, Paris.

Seriously, this is the perfect movie for your first date. Or even your 1000 one.

The trailer for the American market is out now, but I prefer to show you probably one of the better stories in the movie.

It's directed by Tom Tykwer, called True, with Natalie Portman. Personally, I just get happy thinking about it (turn up the volume since the sound is not that good).

Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End

With the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End approaching maybe we should prepare our expectations a bit. Not many reviews are available, but we can get started and maybe add with time.

First the plot: Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle. [IMDB]

Basically, it seems like an improvement from the previous, second, installment. However Cinema Blend don't think it's a huge one.

Jack Sparrow
It seems like Jack Sparrow doesn't have a special purpose other than being dragged around to lighten up the environment. Of course, Sparrow is still a great character and Johny Depp plays him brilliant as always, but unlike the first film the adventure in his own storyline isn't quite visible.

Thankfully we got Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), that shares the real feeling of what a pirate is all about. Keith Richards is also seen during few scenes, being an old experienced pirate, and he does that with great success.

Unfortunately there's a mistake a lot of big movies do (lately Spiderman 3) and that's the multiple storylines. If they're too many we a) loose track and b) we never really get involved with any of them. Urban Cinefile thinks it's what happened, stating in their review:

Clocking in at 168 minutes, Gore Verbinski's third film based on Disney's spectacular Pirates of the Caribbean theme ride is blatantly self-indulgent as a muddle of 15 stories swirl together like an impressive whirlwind whipping up flashes of brilliance amid the chaos. The film is a bit like a journey on a tempestuous ocean with mountainous highs and fathomless lows. I was confused, enthralled, dazzled and bored.

Of course we'll still enjoy the movie, because of it's dazzling visuals, effects and solid performances. Every single actor does a great job keeping the character believable and true to the pirate-theme.

All in all, there's a bit for everyone in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - adventure, action, comedy, romance, drama... Whether you're young or grown it will be a thrilling ride. Recommended cinema viewing.

7/10

UPDATE: Pretty much every other review I read agrees with the above, so there's no need to add something. If you still want to read more, here are few: Variety | LA Times | NY Post

Animated movies rule. Seriously, it seems like all the effort and star-power is concetrated on animated flicks. For instance, Shrek 3 has an incredible cast and is funnier than most "regular" comedies.

Dreamworks is coming with another movie now, called Kung Fu Panda. If it as hilarious as it look, it'll certainly surpass the success of Madagascar.

Po the Panda is the laziest animals in all of the Valley of Peace, but unwittingly becomes the chosen one when enemies threaten their way of life. [IMDB]

I think it's the only time I've written the director's name in the title of news like this, because I feel it's my duty to warn everybody.

Seed is Uwe Boll's next installment in the IMDB bottom 100 list, about a man that is bound and buried alive and seeks bloody vengeance on those who caused him his suffering.

AICN said:

For 5 minutes we have to endure a barrage of real-life footage of animals being tortured and killed. Whimpering foxes being skinned alive and beaten. Baby seals being clubbed... a skinned animal that looked like a dog suffering, obviously dying very slowly, dogs getting their skulls crushed in by heavy boots.

I think I wasted too much energy on this crap already.

The director, Mikael Håfström, is a Swede and good things come from that country now and then. Previously he made Derailed though, so I'm not quite sure.

The cast is great though, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. I actually look forward to this, but won't get too excited by fear to be let down. For instance the poster isn't exactly fantastic or original...

ZODIAC - REVIEWS

May 15th 2007 21:22
Zodiac

Zodiac has had its first screenings recently and we already got several reviews to read and create our own opinion. Though if you don't see it you can't really have a valid opinion...

For you that don't know what this is about, it's based on Robert Graysmith's book about the real life notorious Zodiac, a serial killer who terrorized San Francisco with a string of seemingly random murders during the 1960s and 1970s. Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. are two of the main stars. [IMDB]

Variety finds it pretty attractive, loving the performances and simple technique it provides, like the transitions. Overall pretty mediocre, not mind-blowing but still good.

Pretty similar feelings are those of John Doe, especially pointing out the incredible atmosphere and grip it has to make the viewer present and part of the story. Here's an excerpt:

The film is an atmospheric but deliberately unglamorized recreation that hypnotises with its thoughtful staging, well drawn characters and water dripping pace. Spanning four decades yet somehow still feeling like it is a lot shorter than its 151 minute running time. There is the illusion of constant movement because of the echoing real life, crucial actions arriving with little or no warning.

Unfortunately Rotten Tomatoes feels differently about the time frame. "A long movie with lots of suspects and details but no pay-off" is their conclusion. Stating Fincher did a great job visually, the details and locations made it hard to follow.

Thankfully New York Post gives us a bright hope, giving it almost top rating, 3.5/4. Again, the acting by everyone, as well as Fincher's classic approach and appreciated touch, made it worthy every single minute.

Conclusion, Zodiac gives us stunning visuals, an interesting story and solid performances. Maybe a bit too long for some, but not for most. Go see it when it arrives to your theater cause few movies have such positive reactions each year.

SPIELBERG AND JACKSON DO TINTIN

May 15th 2007 16:10
Tintin

Great news available!

Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson will adapt at least one of the 24 Tintin books each. There are three movies planned right now, but the director of the third is not yet known.

Tintin is a very interesting character that deserves the movie-format. When I was younger I used to read pretty much any of these books I could get my hands on.

The technique that'll be used is 3D mo-cap CG, an exciting way to make the movie real but still animated. As long as they don't ruin the originality they can even play Tintin themselves as far as I'm concerned. Ok, not Jackson for obvious reasons.

DreamWorks Animation is responsible.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. ON IRON MAN

May 14th 2007 21:46
Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. had an interview recently with Time Out Abu Dhabi and shared his thoughts about Iron Man.

It's pretty interesting, but here's what he says specifically about Iron Man:

I went after it. I hunted it down. I am a fan of the comic book. It’s mythology. Stan Lee created the character on a dare to see if he could make a wealthy, establishment, weapons manufacturing, hard drinking, womanising p**** into someone who is likeable and a hero. And I definitely have had to overcome certain perceptions. But I know underneath it, my heart is in the right place. And that’s kind of what the movie is about.

Unlike so many other superhero movies that something amazing happened to them or they were traumatised by bats or something that justifies why they have a transformation, he’s a guy. He’s a guy who has to do extraordinary things. That’s why I love Die Hard and The Matrix. Deep down I’m a big nerd for superhero movies.

I don't know why, but I have greater expectations about this than I've had in a long time. Well actually I do know why - Robert Downey Jr. and Iron Man are generally as cool as me.

Blonde Ambition is a comedy about a young professional woman (Simpson) that unwittingly becomes the pawn of two business executives in their bid to oust the head of a mega-conglomerate. Includes Luke Wilson. [IMDB]

I don't know, I want to like it but can't. The director's, Scott Marshall, previous movie Keeping Up with the Steins had some good laughs in it but overall didn't do much. You'll like it if you're Jew though (edit: it's about bar mitzvah and Jewish culture).

The Kingdom is a thriller about a team of U.S. government agents that's sent to investigate the bombing of an American facility in the Middle East. [IMDB]

It's one of those films that look perfect on paper. Like the cast - Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Chris Cooper, Jeremy Piven... Get the point?

Next we got the trailer...

THE DARK KNIGHT - LOGO

May 13th 2007 22:46
Dark Knight logo

In this rather boring Sunday, I thought I would post some quite popular news. Still boring though.

The Batman sequel, The Dark Knight, is set up with an official site as of yesterday. It contains nothing except the above logo. I'm glad we got something official from Warner Bros. but I can't say it looks amazing. At least not as amazing as the Batman Begins logo, if you remember it.

Enjoy until more content is loaded onto the Dark Knight site.

TALK TO ME - POSTER

May 12th 2007 16:11
I'm a Don Cheadle fan, basically because very movie he's in turns out to be really frikkin' good. Like Hotel Rwanda, Ocean's Eleven, Crash and Reign Over Me.

The fact that he's cool in real life as well is a nice bonus.

Anyhow, I know he won't let me down with the next movie coming up soon. It has already screened at the ShoWest and gotten great reviews. Other than that, biographical dramas are never wrong.

It's called Talk to Me, the story of Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene (Don Cheadle), an outspoken ex-con who talked his way into becoming an iconic radio personality in the 1960s in Washington, D.C. [IMDB]

Take a look at the poster below and tell me how much this movie will rule.

NICOLAS CAGE IS AL CAPONE

May 12th 2007 15:59
Smokey Cage

UPDATE: Cage dropped from playing Al Capone.

I'm sure you remember The Untouchables, with Kevin Costner and Sean Connery. I'm also sure you liked it.

Brian De Palma, the director, is currently working on a sequel (more of a prequel) called The Untouchables: Capone Rising. I know you're thinking something along the lines of "oh no", but when the original director agrees to work on a sequel it's almost always a good sign.

Now it's confirmed who'll play Al Capone in it. Nicolas Cage. Even though Cage is lately really disappointing, I still believe he's a great actor. Nicolas Cage has worked with Brian before, in Snake Eyes, another awesome movie.

Capone Rising will be about Capone's arrival in Chicago, his dealings with cop Jimmy Malone, and his subsequent rise to power. [IMDB]

MPAA WILL JUDGE SMOKING MOVIES

May 11th 2007 16:25
Aaron Smoking

Well, what do ya know? Another step by MPAA to erase films as we knew them.

Smoking wasn't very popular in the 90s, at least not as much as in the Eastwood-days, but lately filmmakers have started to include it again, as something natural to the day-to-day life. And rightfully so.

But it seems like MPAA dislikes that and reported it will be a factor they'll be judging from in the new movies. In their statement they said:

Clearly, smoking is increasingly an unacceptable behavior in our society. There is broad awareness of smoking as a unique public health concern due to nicotine's highly addictive nature, and no parent wants their child to take up the habit. The appropriate response of the rating system is to give more information to parents on this issue.

Three questions will have particular weight for our rating board when considering smoking in a film. Is the smoking pervasive? Does the film glamorize smoking? And, is there an historic or other mitigating context?

Basically that separates a lot of movies from their PG-13 ratings. I don't like this and I don't think many do. However, there's nothing we can do about it other than get used to it.

Maybe we should blindfold our kids from now on, cause you know, a lot of people are smoking in public...

GREENESTREET FILMS POSTERS

May 11th 2007 11:50
Greenestreet is a production company based in New York. It has managed to create some nice "big" movies to be released this year.

Recently it released four posters from four films that all seem interesting to me. They're not very big, but here we go.

Tenderness
Starring Russel Crowe, Tenderness is a drama about a cop who tries to figure out if a teen murdered his family or not. [IMDB]

Bill poster
Bill, a comedy about a man with a cheating wife and a rebellious teen. Aaron Eckhart and Jessica Alba is never wrong. [IMDB]

Awake poster
This is a rather ugly poster, but I get it. It makes sense considering Awake is about a guy who remains conscious during his open heart surgery. Jessica Alba in this as well and Hayden Christensen. [IMDB]

Gary Coach poster
Gary the Tennis Coach, the smallest of these movies, but still promising. A comedy with Seann William Scott (American Pie) in it. [IMDB]

SICKO POSTER ART

May 11th 2007 11:00
Michael Moore is the kind of guy that gets on everybody's nerves, in a successful way. Weird but true. Sicko is the next movie he'll show that skill of his.

I remember seeing Bowling for Columbine and thought it was a masterpiece. Then Fahrenheit 9/11, still good but not as great. Hopefully this trend will be broken with Sicko and Moore will take us to the top once again.

We can have an early look at it now, through what seems to be a future poster.

YOU KILL ME - TRAILER

May 10th 2007 09:30
You Kill Me is the new movie starring Ben Kingsley, Luke Wilson and Tea Leoni. Great cast indeed.

It's about a hit-man (Ben) who tries to turn his life around and gets a job in a mortuary, where he meets a woman who is a relative to one of his hits [IMDB].

The last film I saw with Ben Kingsley, Lucky Number Slevin, was an incredible success. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it immensely. Humor, action and suspense in one. Pretty much like this trailer:

I think Ben Kingsley is re-living his golden years (Gandhi - Schindler's List) again.

Tim Roth

Great news folks!

I like most things Tim Roth touches and The Incredible Hulk is becoming greater with every announcement it makes. First Edward Norton and now Tim.

Tim Roth will be the villain, a real one unlike the Ang Lee version. He's Emil Blonsky who becomes the Abomination. More details from Variety:

Blonsky is a KGB agent who deliberately exposes himself to the gamma rays that caused Bruce Banner to morph into the Hulk. Blonsky has upped the dosage, making him larger and stronger than the Hulk, but unable to change back to human form. He blames Banner for his problem, and makes his best efforts to destroy the Hulk.

Next we'll see Tim Roth in Youth Without Youth, directed with Francis Ford Coppola.

THE EX - REVIEW

May 9th 2007 19:10
The Ex

This is a filmpeeker's review. That means there will be zero spoilers and just enough info. Because I said so.

Since The Ex premieres this week, I thought it would be a good time to review it since I've had the chance to see it before you. Ha.

PLOT
Tom Reilly (Zach Braff) likes justice a bit too much and therefore can't keep a job. Bosses are always hateful. So he moves together with his pregnant wife Sofia Kowalski (Amanda Peet) to her parent's town. That's where the real story and obstacles begin.

It turns out Tom will work where his father-in-law has worked for endless years, in a advertising firm. His mentor, Chip Sanders (Jason Bateman), who is supposed to show him around and make him feel at home, seemingly a crippled innocent man, ultimately is the guy Sofia dated when young.

Chip immediately starts with his plan to make Tom's life hell, through sneaky and ugly ways, and succeeds very well. Until it finally is Tom's turn...

CRITIQUE
The Ex a movie with almost no wide marketing at all, few have heard of it. That's sad, because if you like different comedies, the ones that actually are well done and have solid performances, this is your cup of tee.

The Ex Chip
Don't expect a laugh-non-stop comedy though. It's pretty silent and enjoyable in a very nice way. It actually feels good watching it. Then again, who don't get happy with Jason Bateman's talent? The two recent films I've seen with him, this and Smokin' Aces, get a lot of bonus-points for his acting.

Then we have Zach Braff. Like I've said before, he knows a good script when he sees one. This is a great script, with small plot-holes and lots of thought behind it. That's not what you'd expect by first-time writers, David Guion and Michael Handelman.

There's also a sequence at the beginning with Paul Rudd in it. Now that was truly hilarious. Just worth mentioning.

The director, Jesse Peretz, also new in the business, does a wonderful job showing us everything the way they are supposed to be shown. Sure, not many artistic surprises, but simple is still good. Daring and bad is worse.

The few things I can find negative are mostly some points with no logical reactions. For instance, Tom looses $1000 in a rather ridiculous way, but doesn't care the least. And then two or three similar instances. Of course stuff like that aren't mortal, just few annoying details.

CONCLUSION
A movie you should watch knowing you won't cry laughing, but surely enjoy. If it had a bigger budget this could become much better, but it already is a nice film to grab in DVD. Or cinema, but you won't gain anything by the big screen.

8/10

Seriously, these are probably the worst posters I've yet to see this year. I don't mind bright colors or character posters, but these seem just too amateurish. Like they gave photoshop to a 5-year old and said "make, make, make".

ANCHORMAN - 300 TRAILER MASHUP

May 8th 2007 12:23
Anchorman is one of the greatest comedies of all time. Will Ferrell simply nails it. So does the rest of the cast as well, like Steve Carrel (probably the best character in comedic history).

On the other side, 300 has almost no comedy at all in it. But what it has is a solid soundtrack and exciting voices.

Therefore, a mix of those two would be... magic. And it is. Watch this trailer and behold a masterpiece.

ELI ROTH WANTS GRINDHOUSE 2

May 7th 2007 14:55
Eli Roth

Eli Roth is the guy behind Hostel, a movie with more blood, gore and sex than most R-rated movies, if not all.

He also made a fake trailer for Grindhouse, called Thanksgiving. Now he wants more of that, planning for a second Grindhouse. He doesn't care about the low profit it made at the box-office. This is what he said to Cinematical:

My feeling is that three and a half hours, it was a long time at the movies for people. The movie itself was three hours and 15 minutes and then there’s 20 minutes of trailers and then parking and everything, it suddenly became a four hour evening for people. So there’s only so many times you can show it in a day and a lot of people getting off work, it was tough for people to find the time to see it. The people that saw it loved it. People were going crazy for it and I think that 25 years from now, everyone will talk about the classic movie Grindhouse and no one will talk about — the words “box office disappointment” won’t even apply.

There's some truth in his words, because estimations say it will do much better in DVD sales. However, I also think people simply aren't into that kind of shit. And by people I mean the majority, cause I'm sure a large group adores it.

Edgar Wright is the maker of the other fake trailer in Grindhouse, Don’t, and he's also interested in expanding it to a full film. They have already met to talk about it, he and Eli.

I don't know, there's actually a chance it will do better now that they learned from Grindhouse. Still, I personally wouldn't see a movie based on this trailer:

It's happy poster-day today, with several posters released for some great movies. Thankfully, all posters are incredibly compelling as well.

Transformers poster

First we got Transformers. It has gotten several versions out by now, all as nice. However, I think this takes a shared first place with the one we saw few weeks ago. We can feel the magnitude and power of the machines, and prepare for an adventure full of action.

Brothers Solomon poster

The Brothers Solomon is one of the comedies with bright predictions. Everyone loves Will Arnett and the concept sounds solid. As did the trailer. The poster is fun and pretty original, even though the idea is simple.

Ocean's Thirteen poster

Finally a poster of Ocean's Thirteen worth looking at. I've personally felt the previous posters disappointing, with no imagination. This one does still not reach the top, since it doesn't quite transfer the feeling of the movie, but it's nice to look at.

Hello all Michael Madsen fans! Here's a first look at one of his newest movies that ended filming few days ago.

It's called Outrage and is a thriller about some bad guys that try to get hold of the funds that are kept secret by the hero. The only way to reach the money is by finding the code to a safe. And so on. [IMDB]

Not much is revealed just yet, but it's an independent movie so don't expect something huge either. That means unless it ends up being really good and gets positive critique in festivals, studio release, etc. Michael Madsen is reason enough to think it has nice chances at it.

Anyway, a picture is available from the set, not the most clear one, but you can see Michael in it, looking hardcore as always.

Carnage

That went fast... Not days from the premiere of Spider-Man 3 and we already know who will become the next installment's villains through freezedriedmovies.

Spider-Man is one of the few movies that you actually care more about the villains than the hero himself. Let's face it - they're really cool. Good villains can make a good movie great, unless it's called Spider-Man 3, cause then there's no cure. For more info read my review of it.

So who will these villains be then? The short version: CARNAGE and LIZARD.

The longer version: If you've seen Spider-Man 3, you'll know that Dr. Curt Connors had a small piece of the black symbiote that Peter brought him to examine. The rest of it became Venom, who ultimately died (at least that's what they made us believe) at the end of the movie. However, that small piece will find its way to Cletus Kasady, a cold-blooded serial killer, and become Carnage.

Lizard

As for the Lizard, as you can see in the picture as well, it has a doctor's robe. That's because Dr. Curt Connors, mentioned above, will be that villain himself.

Another assumption I do completely by myself is that Peter will try to get rid of his powers, in order to get Mary Jane back. He might blame them for his inability to live a happy life... like everyone else. To do that he will drink something dangerous and become a monster himself, beat Lizard and team up with him in order to take down Carnage. I'm not a reliable source though so count this as rants by a fan.

Have I done my homework or what?

Whatever the case is, I believe these news are real and exciting. I don't mind Sam Raimi directing again but he better do it right this time.

11.05.07: DUCK - TRAILER

May 6th 2007 15:22
Duck

Duck, opening this week, is not a very known movie nor is it "big". However, it has gotten some nice reviews from people who saw it at festivals and after seeing the trailer I can understand why.

Duck is about a dispossessed man and the duck who follows him as a mother that quest west, on foot, in search of water and meaning in the desert that is L.A year 2009. [IMDB]

The leading role, the man, is played by Philip Baker Hall, a quite underestimated actor. He often gets supporting roles, so it's refreshing to see him a completely different context. This movie is based on his character. It concentrates on his story. And a duck.

Even though it might sound like a too independent movie, it seems cozy and happy in a way. The kind of movie that teaches us just a little bit more about life.

SPIDERMAN 3 - REVIEW!

May 5th 2007 23:34
Spiderman 3

Finally I got around to see it and here's the filmpeeker's review. That means there will be zero spoilers and just enough info. Because I said so.

PLOT
Basically Spiderman 3 (or Spider-Man if you're by the book) is a story about Peter Parker's and Mary Jane's relationship. Mary thinks Peter becomes obsessed with all the attention and popularity he gains as Spiderman, which overshadows herself and her carrier.

Then we got the villains. Harry Osborn as the New Goblin, seeking to revenge his father from the previous Spiderman. Sandman, who tries to get money for his sick daughter and gets annoyed when Spiderman intervenes during his robberies. Lastly, but most importantly, we got Venom. Venom is a weird creature, with abilities similar to Spiderman, hungry for evilness.

Imagine all that happening at once in a groovy mix and you get Spiderman 3.

CRITIQUE
Believe it or not, I'm incredibly disappointed. In matter of fact, I wish this didn't exist. It wasn't worse than most comic movies out there, but you expect more from a franchise that has done great so far.

It says action and adventure under "genre", but this was drama and comedy, with only some cool action-sequences. After all, who am I to dislike the effects this film provides?

Spiderman 3 evil
While attempting to create a movie with "brains", they basically ruined a movie with awesomeness. While attempting to be funny, they ruined its believability. I don't think there will be a need to satirize this because it does that job perfectly by itself.

I'm just going to mention one particular part, where Peter Parker becomes obsessed by the black suit, "the evil side". Suddenly he gets a belly, flirts like Dumb Dumber and dances like Mr. Bean. I mean there's a limit somewhere.

Does the "brainy" part works then? No, unfortunately not. There's no deepness or sympathy built around the characters we're supposed to feel sorry about. Sometimes it's even ridiculously sad at parts, but without reason. There's simply no balance.

Certainly, there were some positives though. Well done effects! The Sandman was well executed and so were pretty much all specials. The performances were pretty solid as well, James Franco and Tobey Maguire had some wonderful moments. And it was fun, but I didn't go to watch a comedy. Too much.

Although the movie was generally weak, I don't think it was all Sam Raimi's fault. The directing looked good and the picture was wonderful. The problem, I think, was mostly the script. Why would Sam let his brother, Ivan Raimi, be in the writing team? The guy has made practically nothing before. Keyword: connections.

CONCLUSION
A sad attempt to create the final, as known so far, Spiderman. I recommend a view if you've seen the first two, since it's certainly not un-watchable, just disappointing and ridiculous. On the other hand, if you don't really care, don't bother to visit the big screen. Wait for the DVD or Transformers.

6,5/10

LICENSE TO WED - TRAILER

May 4th 2007 20:02
License to Wed

Today there are plenty of good news for everyone, but particular on the comedic side. Shrek 3 also had its trailer released earlier.

But now it's all about License to Wed, the comedy including Robin Williams and that Office-guy... John Krasinski (a.k.a. Jim).

To be honest, like I mentioned when we took a look at the poster, this didn't seem like very good to me. I thought John/Jim wouldn't fit that well since he might be stuck with that weird Office-style. Thankfully though, after watching the trailer, I'm happy to be proved wrong.

John does an excellent job, totally believable and completely hilarious. So is Robin Williams and everyone else. In fact, I dare to say this will be one of the funniest comedies released this year. I'm not saying it will blow the box-office, since Robin hasn't exactly kept high quality lately, but I'm sure it will do very well in DVDs and just get a good buzz generally.

At least I'm very curious to see it due to this trailer.

SHREK 3 - TRAILER

May 4th 2007 19:46
Shrek 3

I'm always happy when I see good sequels. And this is a great one, at least if I'm gonna believe the new trailer.

Yesterday we saw the smart and amusing posters. However, it just gets brighter. The trailer includes some solid jokes and a detailed animation. It doesn't matter if it's Pixar-beautiful or not, what I wanna get from Shrek the Third are some loud laughs. Like the ones heard by me during the first two.

I remember a clip not long ago where the American Idol-finalists got to see Shrek 3, as the first ones to see it in its complete. They liked it a lot, and if American Idol-people like it a lot, it means it's good. Or that Dreamworks bribed them to look happy... *hint*

Seriously though, it looks awesome, so I have no doubt their feelings were pure. Or were they...?

AMERICAN GANGSTER - POSTERS

If you haven't heard of this movie yet, now's the time to become excited.

American Gangster is about a drug lord that smuggles heroin into Harlem during the 1970s by hiding the stash inside the coffins of American soldiers returning from Vietnam [IMDB].

If the incredibly interesting plot isn't enough for you, take a quick look at the cast: Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Cuba Gooding Jr., Josh Brolin.

To f* this up would be like eating a banana with the ass. Oops, that sounded wrong, didn't it? Point is, it would be nearly impossible for director Ridley Scott to not create something beautiful with the material he has to work with. He's on a good path with the posters anyway...

WEDDING DAZE - TRAILER

May 4th 2007 08:23
Wedding Daze

Wedding Daze is the new movie starring Jason Biggs, well-known from American Pie. I never thought of this guy in a serious way, more as an entertainer who takes on any R-rated comedies.

Wedding Daze is exactly that. An R-rated comedy that shows us how love has nothing to do with perfection. After losing the woman of his dreams, Anderson (Biggs) is convinced he'll never fall in love again. BUT... [IMDB]

Now, I'm not saying it's not good or funny, just not something to remember. A new trailer is out, interesting enough, so...

Two short news folks!

First off, Bruce Willis has expressed himself about the PG-13 rating of Die Hard 4.0 (I like this title better than Live Free or Die Hard). In an interview with Vanity he said:

I really wanted this one to live up to the promise of the first one, which I always thought was the only really good one. That's a studio decision that is becoming more and more common, because they're trying to reach a broader audience. It seems almost a courageous move to give a picture an R rating these days. But we still made a pretty hardcore, smashmouth film.

I'm baffled that a movie needs an R-rating to be good these days. I mean, there are plenty of good PG-13 flicks out there so something is wrong with Bruce Willis' take on the ratings. Why should even ratings have anything to do with quality? Unless the filmmakers are forced to cut down on the creative result, which I don't think is the case with Die Hard 4.0.

On other news, Vin Diesel's new flick, Babylon A.D., has some pictures officially released. Now, I'm not a fan of Vin, but with Find Me Guilty I think there might even be hope.

Babylon A.D. is action with some thriller and sci-fi. A working mix if you ask me. More info when a closer peek is available.

IRON MAN - THE COSTUME DESIGN

May 2nd 2007 21:54
Few days ago we had a look at Robert Downey Jr. as the Iron MAN, now we're gonna take a look at the IRON Man.

EW got a first look at the costume, designed by Oscar-winning F/X guru Stan Winston. I like the fact that it's very faithful to the comic's costume of Iron Man. It's just a bit adjusted, in a good way. Looks even cooler.

Another thing I'm glad to read is that Favreau, the director, says it's gonna be ''a decidedly adult superhero story'. We've seen it work before, with Batman Begins nevertheless, so it's the right step. After all Iron Man was kinda adult from the comics already, with his drinking problems and all...

Anyway here's the costume:

WOULD YOU LIKE SOME JOOST?

May 2nd 2007 16:37
Joost

For you that don't know what Joost is (which you should considering all the buzz), it's a program that allows you to watch tv-programs online. For more info visit their site.

Joost announced recently that it has entered partnerships with Turner Broadcasting System, the National Hockey League, Sports Illustrated, Hasbro and Sony Pictures Entertainment. All of these companies will provide different shows. Sony will for instance provide vintage TV shows like Starsky & Hutch and Charlie’s Angels, and Hasbro will offer two channels based on the Transformers and G.I. Joe animated series.

I've have had the pleasure of testing Joost from it's earlier beta-versions, and found it pretty helpful to get through the sick days or the stay-at-home-bored periods.

The new version also has chats, more channels and added features that might be interesting for those who like to explore.

Unfortunately you still need invites to download and run Joost, but don't worry - I got plenty of them so if you're interested, just leave a comment with your email address and I'll send one to ya.

Have a good one and let me know your thoughts,

KNOCKED UP CLIPS

May 2nd 2007 15:57
Knocked Up

One of the most expected comedies this year is probably Knocked Up. After 40 Year Old Virgin everyone just diggs R-rated comedies. Naughty jokes seem to be "the thing" right now.

The trailer and poster of Knocked Up was released a while ago, but now some clips are released over at Yahoo!

Personally I didn't like. Lame clips, not special in any way. I'm pretty sure within its context and on the whole it will still be a nice flick though.

Until the release in almost exactly one month then, June 1.

Hey!

I've changed the style of the site, obviously, so any feedback is appreciated. To find something nice is tricky these days...

BUG - POSTERS

May 2nd 2007 10:43
Recently two quite nice posters were released, of the thriller Bug.

Why Bug? Because it's about a paranoid, unhinged, war veteran who sees insects everywhere and holes up with a lonely woman in a spooky Oklahoma motel room [IMDB]. Sounds lame, I know, but the buzz is good so I'm sure there's more to it.

Ashley Judd is the star and William Friedkin the director (Rules of Engagement, The Hunted).

It's released May 25, which is a long time since its first screening at last year's Cannes.

RUSH HOUR 3 - TRAILER

May 1st 2007 22:53
Rush Hour 3

Finally the long full trailer of Rush Hour 3 is out, and it doesn't look bad.

First of all, you shouldn't expect anything more than the previous two. In matter of fact, you should expect less than the previous two. If you do that, then this third installment won't be a disappointment.

The trailer shows some powerful women, easy humor and a fat Tucker. Jackie Chan looks the same and still got some mad skills.

If you're excited about this, see some clips and the previous teaser as well.

FANTASTIC FOUR 2 - TRAILER

May 1st 2007 09:23
Fantastic Four fire

We've seen a lot of stuff so far, but nothing exciting. Stuff like posters, posters, pictures, pictures and more. Even the teaser released few weeks ago was of no interest at all.

That's about to change, because a trailer came out recently that lets me be just a bit optimistic. I still think this ain't gonna be good, but not worse than the first one. The trailer shows a story, some humor and an ugly Alba. Ok, at least it shows an ugly Alba, I don't know about those other two.

You can watch the trailer here. Released June 15.

MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS - POSTER

May 1st 2007 08:04
Cannes is getting closer and all we can do is watch it happen from a distance. However, soon enough we'll also be able to enjoy the movies they'll see, so let's start with one of them.

My Blueberry Nights seems very promising. In fact, the most promising of the whole Cannes-list. At least from the English-speaking ones.

With talent like this you can only expect the best: Norah Jones, Jude Law, David Strathairn, Tim Roth, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman... the list doesn't want to end.

It's about a young woman (Jones) that takes a soul-searching journey across America to resolve her questions about love while encountering a series of offbeat characters along the way [IMDB].

This doesn't just include Oscar-winners, it might even become an Oscar-winner itself. The new poster was removed through a request by Christal Films, but here's a fine picture of Natalie Portman to keep you company until something else arrives.
