August 30th 2007 19:24
Creepy Saw IV is closing its release and we actually don't know much about the plot other than that Jigsaw is a crazy dude even when he's dead.

VIN DIESEL IN FAST AND THE FURIOUS 4?

August 30th 2007 19:04
fast and the furious 4

This are certainly good news, even though they are of the "maybe"-kind. It's revealed that Vin Diesel and other old cast-members will appear in the fourth installment of Fast and the Furious, but a script is not even completed yet so I guess nothing is 100% yet.

I enjoyed the first two films, and the third as well at a level, so why not? I'm not a fan, but why not? Vin is always fun to watch... sometimes when it isn't supposed to be fun.

Get ready for some flabbergasting cars though!

STRIPPER ROLE FOR RIHANNA

August 30th 2007 08:40
Stripper role for Rihanna

It’s been reported that R&B singer Rihanna has been going to strip clubs to study for her next movie role, in which she apparently will play a stripper. After visiting a few establishments for research purposes, she admitted that the whole experience just "weirded her out."

"I went with some friends to a strip club not long ago," said Rihanna. "I went because I was very curious. I didn't learn any dancing tips. I've been reading some film scripts so I had to go to see what it's like. I was very weirded out."

Rihanna hasn’t acted in any previous films, and the exact film she is preparing for is not known.

I would say that she will have quite a few curious fans going to see the film for more than her acting or singing abilities.

NEW SWEENEY TODD PICTURE RELEASED

NEW SWEENEY TODD PICTURE RELEASED

OK, there is a possibility that I’m forming an obsession over Johnny Depp. This is my second post on him in 24 hours. My only excuse is that this is part two to the first post I wrote earlier and it seems rude not to complete the set of information. I don’t want to become known as an inconsiderate blogger.

Anywho, another picture of Sweeney Todd has just been released and I thought I would share it with you. Unfortunately there isn’t a close-up of Johnny’s face but it certainly is atmospheric with a strong authentic feeling.

Enjoy.

KEANU REEVES TO STAR IN THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL REMAKE

Twentieth Century Fox has chosen Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) to star in The Day the Earth Stood Still, a remake of the 1951 Robert Wise-directed sci-fi classic. The original starred Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, and Sam Jaffe. The film was adapted by Edmund H. North from the short story written by Harry Bates, Farewell to the Master. and directed by Robert Wise. The score was written by Bernard Herrmann and is notable for its use of two theremins (electronic instrument played by moving the hands near its two antennas, often used for high tremolo effects). I didn’t know the actual name of the instrument before this post, but indeed when I think of the film, I can hear the music in my mind, it is memorable.

It was over the weekend that Reeves accepted the role of Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth with an unyielding, heavily-armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued violent behaviour will lead to annihilation by a species watching them from afar.

Erwin Stoff is producing and Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) is directing a David Scarpa script. Production is expected to begin at the end of the year or early 2008.

Michael Rennie devised the The Klaatu role. The 1951 film's premise, a response to the rise of the Cold War after WWII, is being updated, and as expected, the film will use advanced visual effects.

I hope they can coach Keanu into using different voice tones for his role so that he might shake his wooden presence up a bit. The only film that I’ve really been impressed by Keanu was A Scanner Darkly.

I’m not sure about this one...I think it is one of those classic films that should be left untouched.

SWEENEY TODD - BURTON TOLD TO TONE DOWN BLOOD AND GUTS

Apparently DailyIndia just reported that director Tim Burton has been asked to tone down the gruesome scenes in Sweeney Todd. According to sources, the prosthetic look-alike limbs were so realistic that some of the crew became queasy and had to leave the set for breaks. Others were disgusted because there of the large amount of sliced-up 'corpses', and some spare 'necks' in case Burton might want to shoot several takes of the same throat-cutting scene. Sounds logical to me, it’s always good to have a spare neck around in case you need it.

I’ll set the scene a bit better, Todd's victims sit in a mechanical chair expecting a short back and sides but instead Johnny severs their throats. Next he flicks a lever, the floor opens and voila, they fall down into the den of Todd's mistress, Mrs Lovett (played by Helena Bonham Carter). Sounds like a ride at a funfair to me, an enticing mixture of fear and excitement. For the viewer of course, not the hair victim.

One scene that particularly distressed the studio bosses was when they saw a ten-year-old boy cut up body parts, which were then thrown into a meat grinder and turned into mince. OK, that does sound bloodthirsty, but it’s supposed to be a horror film. It’s supposed to be scary, no one is going to see the film for the scenery, we know what it’s about and audiences would be prepared and expecting such scenes.

The Daily Mail quoted as an insider, "Tim's not happy that the studio is asking for so many cuts to the cutting...The thing is, the studio really likes the film and they want to make it accessible to as big an audience as possible - which means stemming the blood flow. But that's a bit difficult for a story involving a guy who gets high slitting throats."

Are they mad? How can you have a film like Sweeney Todd without the blood and gore, after all that’s the main theme? We’re supposed to see Sweeney slit throats and enjoy it, how would it be true to the original story if that didn’t happen? Or maybe I’m just in a sadistic mood....

I think it’s obvious from my last post on this film that I’m really looking forward to seeing it and this doesn’t deter me, it just means that I’ll have to brace myself a bit more and that’s not a pun.

IRON MAN

August 27th 2007 14:40
IRON MAN

Iron Man is based on the long-running Marvel comic book series, which tells the story of Tony Stark, the mysterious heir to the Stark Enterprises fortune.

As a driven inventor and executive who appears to have everything, Tony is haunted by his dark side. Tony was forced to create a life support suit to keep him alive after an earlier accident and he decided to use the suit technology to fight crime.

Though he commands his empire by day, by night he secretly transforms into Iron Man, the living incarnation of decades of defence spending and modernism.

Strapping on billions of dollars worth of state-of-the-art armour and weaponry each night to fight crime, terrorism and corporate espionage, Tony begins to bend under the strain of his double lifestyle and must ultimately confront the nemesis he can never beat -- himself.

The film has an impressive cast including Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Samuel L. Jackson and Hilary Swank.

It’s due out on the 1st May 2008.

So, we are soon to see another comic book hero on our big screen. I wonder how this one will fare. It sounds like it has potential to me.

SUPERBAD - SECOND WEEK AT NUMBER ONE

SUPERBAD - SECOND WEEK AT NUMBER ONE

Sony's teen comedy Superbad maintained the number one spot at the box office this weekend, while surprisingly (in my opinion anyway), Mr. Bean's Holiday beat off all other new entries.

Superbad made an estimated $18 million from 2,948 locations in its second week. In its first 10 days, the film has grossed $68.5 million, the best showing for an R-rated picture this year after the Warner Brothers film 300. In second and third place were The Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 3.

It’ll be interesting to see how the films fares when it opens in Australia. I think this picture tells us a lot...

VALKYRIE - NEW TOM CRUISE FILM

August 26th 2007 23:52
VALKYRIE - NEW TOM CRUISE FILM

During the filming of Tom Cruise's new movie, Valkyrie eleven people were injured on the weekend, one seriously. The incident happened while a truck was negotiating a curve in the Mitte neighbourhood in central Berlin. As expected, filming was immediately suspended.

In the film, Cruise stars as Colonel Count Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, a leader of the failed 1944 plot to kill Adolf Hitler. Parts are being filmed at historical locations in Berlin's government district.

The truck that caused the accident will be examined to determine what happened.

Cruise has been staying in Berlin with his wife and daughter in Brandenburg, the eastern state surrounding Berlin.

I hadn’t realised that Cruise had another film up his judgmental sleeve, probably because I’m not a huge fan. Valkyrie is due for release in 2008 so it’s a while away and Cruise is joined by other big names such as Stephen Fry, Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh as well as Eddie Izzard (that’ll be interesting).

aliens vs predator requiem

Wow, that went fast, since few days ago we found out what the title is for this sequel, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, FOX already released a trailer. An R-rated one too.

I must say I don't expect much, but after watching the trailer I don't expect little either. It's quite full of action, the monsters look good and so does Reiko Aylesworth. The effects are awesome too, but that's no surprise considering the two brothers who directed it have worked on visual effects for a large number of big flicks.

Enough said. WARNING: If you're a young dude or weak at heart, this isn't approved for you.

Gerard Butler has won a lot of hearts after his role in 300, and I'm sure not just women ones considering the tight panties he wore.

In P.S, I Love You he's with Hilary Swank who is a bit of both genders (see Boy's Don't Cry). As for the plot it's about a young widow that discovers 10 messages her late husband left, intended to help ease her pain and start a new life. [IMDB]

HITMAN - TRAILER

August 24th 2007 11:40
Hitman poster

I've never played the game and never will, but I don't hate the concept of Hitman. A gun-for-hire known as Agent 47 is ensnared in a political conspiracy, while hired by a group known as "The Agency" to kill targets for cash. [IMDB]

One thing that bothers me is that Timothy Olyphant who plays Hitman doesn't look like him at all. Other than the same hairstyle that is. Hitman is supposed to look hardcore with an oval head and clear lines. Olyphant looks more like a cute teadybear. Maybe you don't think about it well into the story though.

A trailer just got released, so take a look yourself.

MOVING McALLISTER - POSTER

August 23rd 2007 12:54
I never enjoyed Jon Heder as an actor, it's like a character moving around in different movies. In other words he has the same style, brain and unfortunately voice in every performance.

Anyway I shouldn't say much cause his fan base is bigger than me, and that's scary.

In "his" new movie, Moving McAllister, he's a hitchhiker. Probably a dorky one. The movie's is about Rick Robinson, a climbing law intern from Miami with four days until the Bar Exam. Desperate to score points with his boss (McAllister), he commits to a favor he can't afford and ends up in a rundown truck headed to L.A. with his boss's possessions, his Hollywood-bound niece, and her pet pig. Of course Rick finds love, life and maybe himself in this trans-American road trip from hell. [IMDB]

Sounds like a movie I'd like. You?

JURASSIC PARK IV UPDATE

August 23rd 2007 12:20
Jurrasic Park

We are expecting a 4:th installment to Jurassic Park, but it will take a while until it gets made since Spielberg is working on Indiana Jones IV right now. However, a screenplay is re-written which always is a good sign.

When I think how astonished everyone was with the special effects in the first one, I smile thinking how little we knew. Then I feel like those really old people who always note how technology has improved and move on with my life.

Some rumors state Jurassic Park IV will be about the military who trained dinosaurs to carry weapons and stuff but it's so ridiculous I don't believe it for a second.

Justice League

It has become certain that Justice League will have other actors than those playing the same characters in their stand-alones.

Rumors went around saying the stakes are high that Christian Bale would play Batman in Justice League as well, but that's not the case. Brandon Routh won't play Superman in JLA either.

It's a smart move by the studio, eliminating the risk for total disaster. If Justice League turned out like Elektra it would completely take the separate franchises of the superheroes with it to the sewer. Through this they can concentrate into something new and hopefully awesome.

There's also talks about Ryan Reynolds being The Flash in either JLA or its own film. He said himsself to MTV News:

'The Flash' isn't dead at all. There's talk of it being a JLA movie, the Justice League having them all together. And then there's other talk of doing a 'Flash' movie with [director] Shawn Levy.

Said director of Justice League is George Miller, a great one and maker of Mad Max and Oscar-winner Happy Feet. We'll just have to wait and see who he'll choose for the parts. Production begins early next year and a script is already finished.

It's hard to make George Clooney look weird but you can never go wrong with a leather helmet/condom.

Seriously, that's what football players wore in the early 20's. And no, Clooney isn't one of the players, that would be sloppy, but the owner of this college team. Krasinski plays the star player that becomes a sensation and Renée Zellweger the skeptical journalist that smells a fraud with this star.

PENELOPE CRUZ MAY STAR IN NINE MUSICAL

It seems like Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Javier Bardem may all star in the new upcoming Nine musical. As well as being a musical, Nine is also a book written by Arthur Kopit. The music and lyrics were written by Maury Yeston. It’s based on an Italian play by Mario Fratti and inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film 8½.

The musical concentrates upon the film director Guido Contini, who is celebrating his recent and biggest achievement as well as approaching his fortieth birthday. A midlife crisis is blocking his creativity and entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties in early-1960s Venice. Among the women in his life are wife Luisa, producer Liliane La Fleur, mistress Carla, protégé Claudia, and his deceased mother.

Rob Marshall, who wanted to set his cast early to custom-fit the roles according to the individual strengths of all performers, is also courting Sophia Loren and his Chicago star Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Michael Tolkin is adapting the script, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, the composer and lyricist of the original production.

So it seems we might be seeing a singing Penelope soon. That’s different.

JOHNNY DEPP - KING OF KONG REMAKE

August 21st 2007 09:04
JOHNNY DEPP IN KING OF KONG REMAKE

I thought I was too old for actor crushes, but since working on Film Peek I’ve discovered a strong desire for Johnny Depp that I didn’t know existed to this extent. I’m happy to do research on any stories about him and as for googling for images; well that is a complete joy.

Okay, now that I’ve confessed my yearnings, I’ll tell you about his possible new role in The King of Kong, a film that chronicles the arcade battle between long time top player Billy Mitchell and nonentity Steve Wiebe. Over the last several months, the documentary has generated significant attention, including outstanding reviews from film festivals and praise from people such as actor/directors Eli Roth and Kevin Smith. I have to admit that when I first saw the headline, I thought it was sequel of sorts about the film King Kong but clearly it’s not. This is basically a film about extremist video game fans competing to break World Records on classic arcade games.

The duo has started thinking about a dramatisation of the documentary. The outline is approved and the film is eight weeks away from a first draft. Gordon stated, "My first idea for Billy was Johnny Depp." He also said, "Ed Norton I thought would be good. It's really not about the hair, it's about the eyes. It's got to be a real actor." Gosh, so appearances really do matter.

Among their aims for the remake, the filmmakers want to show different aspects they couldn't capture on film. For example, there was a moment recorded only on audio when Steve was approaching a record on his "Donkey Kong" machine in his garage. As he hopped barrels toward glory, his young son was yelling, "Daddy, Daddy, wipe my butt," and hitting dad with a broom. "I think it will be pretty fun physical comedy," Gordon said.

Beyond the remake, Cunningham and Gordon would still like to stage an ultimate Billy vs. Steve matchup. Cunningham said they've considered pay-per-view. "We'd love to do that. The tricky part is how do you do it? You can't do two-player because they'd get out of their rhythm. They have to play one player. Is it first to a million? To get [the current world record, 1,050,200,] everything has to align."

It sounds like quite an unusual premise for a film, what do you think?

COWBOYS - CROWE AND PITT

COWBOYS - CROWE AND PITT

I thought I had covered all the Russell Crowe news in the last few weeks but here’s another story. He is to play a cowboy in the new film 3:10 To Yuma. Crowe will be leading a gun-slinging resurgence opposite Christian Bale.

There haven’t been many westerns films over the past two decades but now we have two contending for an Oscar, Crowe in 3:10 To Yuma and Brad Pitt in his new film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

As Hollywood's major movie studios cut loose their pre-Oscar hopefuls in the US. Crowe’s movie 3:10 To Yuma will be released on the 7th September, he is expected to head to the States in the next fortnight for an intensive red-carpet promotional tour.

Brad Pitt's film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, will be released in the States on the 21st September. Pitt's film will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival (which runs from 29th August to 8th September) roughly the same time Crowe's film is due out in the US.

Director James Mangold stated in reference to Crowe’s acting ability: "There's only a handful of guys who could pull off this combination of savage rage and brilliant charm... Russell's got that in spades."

The question about who will win the Hollywood trophy cannot be predicted, but apparently 3:10 To Yuma already has 'Oscars buzz' stamped all over it in LA circles. But who knows? It is just speculation after all.

Crowe, who has been in Sydney for most of this year, made his most recent appearance on Australian television in South Side Story.

May the best cowboy win....

OWEN WILSON AND JENNIFER ANISTON IN MARLEY & ME

Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston will star in Marley & Me, the Fox 2000 adaptation of John Grogan's bestselling memoir about a pesky Labrador Retriever.

David Frankel, who last directed The Devil Wears Prada will be in the help and Scott Frank is working on the most recent script draft.

Grogan, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, adopts the yellow Labrador, Marley. His idea along with his wife was to give them a feel for what parenthood would be like, but of course the plan goes awry. The pooch proves to be a hyperactive handful. He wreaks mayhem, gets kicked out of obedience school and grows even worse when the children arrive, at the same time becoming an indispensable part of the family.

I’m not sure about this one, it sounds dodgy and too predictable to me.

Production plans to begin early next year.

KIDMAN’S NEW FILM DECLARED A FLOP

August 20th 2007 10:45
KIDMAN’S NEW FILM DECLARED A FLOP

Nicole Kidman’s new science fiction thriller, The Invasion, crashed at its debut in US and Canadian cinemas. The Invasion is a re-make of the 1956 horror classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It finished a poor fifth place, earning only $US6 million ($A7.53 million) on its first weekend.

Additionally, it was savaged by critics, one saying, "In the fourth and by far the worst screen version of The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Nicole Kidman's character struggles to stay awake - as will the audience." Wrote New York Post critic Lou Lumenick.

Not much fun for Nic, I wouldn’t say that she would be used to film flops.

The sluggish launch, essential to the film's financial success, did not come close to paying for Kidman's reported $US17 million fee to make the movie. Eeeek.

The film that beat The Invasion by attaining the number one spot was the teen comedy Superbad, the latest hit from Hollywood's new golden boys, Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen, whose recent successes included Knocked Up and 40-Year-Old Virgin. In second place was Rush Hour 3 earning $US21.8 million, The Bourne Ultimatum was third with $US18.9 million. In its sixth week, The Simpson's Movie, added another $US6.65 million to its kitty.

The Invasion, which also stars the new James Bond, Daniel Craig, is scheduled to open in Australia on the 6th September. I wonder what Australia will think of the film? Sometimes I think audiences are just too tired of remakes of old classics. What’s wrong with making original films these days?

SCORSESE DROPS OUT OF FRANKIE MACHINE

According to Collider reports, Scorsese has resigned from directing the upcoming Frankie Machine film due for release sometime in 2008. The film is based upon the novel, The Winter of Frankie Machine by Don Winslow, and the screenplay is written by David Levien and Brian Koppelman.

This would have been the ninth project for him and Robert De Niro working together. The duo was aiming to make a total of ten movies and now it seems that might not happen or it could take longer than expected. What a pity if they don't make that number ten mark after all their hard work and successful collaborations.

In the film, De Niro plays a hit man who has opts out of the Mafia world to become the owner of a bait shop. Yet, when he discovers he's been targeted for a hit, he moves back into the business.

If Scorsese is not the director, it seems likely that production may fall apart, meaning the end of this film. At this point, it seems that the only movies left for Scorsese and De Niro to create together are The Departed sequels and they are not looking completely certain either. We'll just have to see....

Can you believe this is Heath Ledger? Talk about effective make-up. This is him as the Joker in The Dark Knight who apparently beats up Batman.

Rumours are floating around that there will be several Batmans (or is that Batmen) in the movie, as well as possible decoys...

Even though the film is a year away, somehow these pics leaked out and I found them, I’m proud of myself.

As I tend to say, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. And whatever does, it sounds intriguing.

IS KATIE HOLMES THE NEW WONDER WOMAN?

August 16th 2007 23:52
IS KATIE HOLMES NEW WONDER WOMAN?

According to worstreviews.com, Star magazine has reported that Katie Holmes met with agents and producers to discuss her being in the cinema adaptation of Wonder Woman

"The movie's only at the discussion state, but Katie feels this role as a kick-ass superhero will put her back in the public eye," a source revealed. "She wants to show her stuff, and she wants to prove that she can stand on her own two feet without Tom's help."

Fair enough. I can understand that rationale. It sounds like she is seriously thinking of taking the role.

Apparently the movie version of Wonder Woman has been in development for a while. There have been several scripts, a change of directors and many actresses who were rumoured for the role, including Sandra Bullock, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mariah Carey and Sophia Bush. Katie is now the recent contender they are considering.

According to IMDB, William M. Marston is the film writer who worked on seven episodes of the television series in 1976-1977.

Many people think that the original Wonder Woman Linda Carter who played in the original television series during 1976-1979 should be cast.

We’ll just have to see what happens. The film is scheduled for release in 2009 so we have a while to wait.

It's the third image to be released and one I can barely look at. It shows us that the torture scenes will be extremely brutal and fierce. The picture features a man in a chair, while Freddy Kruger-type blades are slicing up his face. It certainly tells us a lot.

Eeek and eek, again. I'm scared. I would have to see this with company and maybe a psychiatrist.

NO MORE STAR TREK RUMOURS FROM ME

August 15th 2007 09:22
Crowe in Star Trek film
This is my last word on the Star Trek fiasco. I read this on news.com.au today,so it seems that there is mass global confusion.

Although it sounds certain that Crowe has the part, I'm still sceptical. Who still really knows? Next week it could be Dame Edna Everidge.

As a mutiny against being involved, I’m just going to copy and paste the whole article (and source it of course) and I will never say another word on the matter:

Russell Crowe, 43, is set to play a villain in the new Star Trek movie. The Gladiator actor has reportedly been approached by director J.J. Abrams, who is said to be desperate to get him on board for the sci-fi epic.

A source said: "Russell is definitely considering J.J. Abrams's offer. Russell was always a Star Trek fan as a kid, which is a big bonus." The source said: "A baddie would seem more likely for Russell. He could play a part in the historic movie without having to compete with any of the original cast's performances." The new movie is due for release in December 2008.

Disney has released the first three stills from the new First National Treasure 2.

This is the 2007 sequel to the 2004 National Treasure film. It is directed by Jon Turteltaub and written primarily by Gregory Poirier. As of January 27, 2006, numerous producers have been announced, including Jerry Bruckheimer, Oren Aviv, Chad Oman, and Charles Segars. As the first film was so sucessful, earning $347.5 million worldwide, a sequel was given the go-ahead in 2005.

So what can we expect from the sequel? Most of the same cast returns for the second installment, including Justin Bartha and Diane Kruger. Nicolas Cage is Ben Gates acting alongside his Father, played by Jon Voight. In the new film, the story revolves around Benjamin Franklin Gates (Cage), who searches to find the truth behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, by uncovering the mystery in the 18 pages missing from assassin John Wilkes Booth's diary. Exciting stuff.

The adventurous quest begins when Gates finds out that his ancestors were a significant part of history, but not in a good way, of course, otherwise why would we be watching?

The film will be released at the end of the year so there isn't that long to wait if you're keen. Enjoy....

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO BY KEVIN SMITH

Okay, I’m showing some cheesiness this morning, I remember Jason Bateman from Valerie, the sit-com that followed the life of an ordinary suburban American family. It wasn't that exciting or funny, in fact it was formulaic and predictable but my main reason for watching it was Jason Bateman’s hunkiness. Plus, it was on back in the late 80s and I was too young to have developed any decent telly standards yet. That's my excuse. I’m not sure what excuse I have for my Teen Wolf Too adoration, again I can only put it down to age. To most people he is known for his role as Michael Bluth on the successful cult television sitcom Arrested Development.

Anywho, Kevin Smith, the American screenwriter, film director, and the founder of View Askew Productions as well as working on successful films such as Chasing Amy and Good Will Hunting has recently been working on a comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno. He’s stated that the two main roles were written with particular actors in mind. Miri was supposed to be played by Rosario Dawson from Clerks 2, but due to scheduling issues, she wasn’t able to accept the role, apparently leaving Smith taken aback. Smith hasn’t yet revealed who will be playing Zack, but he has stated that it's an actor he admires and whom he hasn't worked with yet.

AICN (Ain’t It Cool News) reports that Smith is talking about Jason Bateman, the star of Arrested Development. And while that seems like an appealing combination, Bateman's has not actually confirmed this yet. It is expected that we’ll know soon, as Smith is known for keeping his fans aware of his plans.

The premise of the Zack and Miri Make a Porno is that two friends, both in their late 20s and feeling various strains of adulthood, decide to launch an amateur porn studio, as a triumphant story for their upcoming high school reunion.

So far, it seems that a poster has not yet been released so I couldn't include one in this post, as the film is due out in 2008. As a replacement, I added one of Jason Bateman which I didn't mind at all. And I'm sure there are some secret fans out there too, I can't believe I'm the only one....am I? Ah well....

JURASSIC PARK IV NEWS

August 14th 2007 10:09
Gosh, there has been so much sequel talk lately hasn’t there? The next one to discuss is Jurassic Park IV.

Universal Pictures has started the casting process for the upcoming fourth installment of Jurassic Park. Plans for this installment have been talked about since June 2002, when director Steven Spielberg told Starlog magazine that he planned to produce Jurassic Park IV with director Joe Johnston who helmed Jurassic Park III.

It seems that at this stage Laura Dern has confirmed her return as Dr. Ellie Sattler, whereas Sam Neill will not be returning. But seeing as things seem to change so quickly in the film world, I’ll wait and see what happens before accepting that as truth. Though I wouldn't mind if they changed Laura Dern as I'm not a huge fan, in fact she drives me a bit nutty.

Although a script was written in February 2006, it’s not sure whether changes have been made or even if a completely new one has been created. Either way, the script is sounding ridiculous. There is talk of dinosaurs carrying weapons and using them in battle scenes. Sounds more like a comedy than a thriller to me. And if this is true, I can't wait to hear what Steven Spielberg has to say about his beloved franchise and how the film got to this stage.

We'll find out soon enough, since production begins in Kauai, Hawaii later this year.

Again, we’ll just have to wait. It might even be another film that goes straight to DVD and hops over the cinema step.

EASTERN PROMISES – POSTER

August 14th 2007 09:33
This new thriller, Eastern Promises from director David Cronenberg reunites him with his A History of Violence main actor Viggo Mortensen.

The film follows the mysterious and merciless Nikolai (Mr. Mortensen), who is linked to one of London’s most notorious organised crime families. His cautiously maintained existence is jarred when he meets Anna (Naomi Watts), an innocent midwife trying to right a wrong, who accidentally uncovers prospective evidence against the family. Now Nikolai must put into motion a harrowing sequence of murder, deceit, and retribution.

Produced by Focus Features and by the looks of this new poster, it seems obvious that we can expect another deliciously twisted and macabre tale.

It opens September 14th.

NEW STAR TREK POSTER

August 13th 2007 10:44
There seems to be new Star Trek information coming out every day. It seems definite that three people have been cast: Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Checkov, and Leonard Nimoy. The ambiguity surrounding Russell Crowe and Tom Cruise continues and to be honest, I might just wait and see what happens when the film is finally completed, all the rumours surrounding those two are doing my head in. Who knows what is going on with those two?

I thought I would post this newly released poster assuming that once a poster is out and circulated it can't be changed. Well, that's what I think anyhoo.

LOST BOYS 2

August 13th 2007 10:23
LOST BOYS 2

ShockTillYouDrop has reported that Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander are both returning for the sequel to the 1987 The Lost Boys. It has also been confirmed that Corey Haim will be reprising his role as Sam Emerson. Additionally, Angus Sutherland - Keifer's half-brother (and son of Donald Sutherland and Francine Racette) - will star as this film's evil vamp. Tad Hilgenbrink (next seen in the upcoming Amusement) and Autumn Reeser (The O.C.) have been cast as the leads.

The new film will be a direct-to-DVD release, which director P.J. Pesce (From Dust Till Dawn 3) is getting ready to begin shooting on Monday.

I am slightly apprehensive about the sequel, mostly because many film follow-ups are rarely as good as the first film. The original had a unique blend of horror, comedy and thriller with a memorable sound track, gaining it a strong cult following. It starred Jason Patric, Corey Haim, and Kiefer Sutherland, and co-stars Jami Gertz, Corey Feldman, Dianne Wiest, Edward Herrmann, Alex Winter, Jamison Newlander, and Barnard Hughes. It was directed by Joel Schumacher.

The possibility of a sequel has been much deliberated over the years. Joel Schumacher made several attempts at creating a sequel during the 1990s but it never eventuated. A script for Lost Boys 2 has circulated since the late 1980s. On January 17th, 2007, it was revealed that Warner Bros. was beginning production on a number of straight-to-video sequels for their existing library of franchise friendly films. Among these productions is The Lost Boys 2, which begins shooting in Vancouver in June 2007. (iMDB link)

Maybe I should just remind you of the original plot seeing as it was quite a while ago, 1987 in fact. I feel old just thinking about how long ago it was. The basic premise is that a mother and her two sons move to a small coastal town in California. They soon learn that the town is plagued by bikers and strange deaths. Michael, the older son becomes involved with a local gang of bikers who have a dark and mysterious secret while Sam becomes friends with two weird boys who claim that the town is being invaded by vampires and it's their mission to get rid of them. As Michael begins to act strange, Sam suspects that his brother has become one of the undead and begins to take his friends seriously.

The original The Lost Boys performed well at the U.S. box office, grossing over $32 million - a strong performance for an R-rated horror movie, especially at that time. I wonder how well the sequel will do. I think I'm looking forward to finding out.

OPENING WEEKEND FOR RUSH HOUR 3

August 13th 2007 08:58
RUSH HOUR 3

I thought I would do a summary post of the top five highest rating films in the States on the weekend.

As you may know, Brett Ratner's latest film Rush Hour 3 opened on the weekend. It earnt an estimated $50 million total from 3,778 theatres, six years after its last installment. Despite the box office total being higher than the $33 million of the original Rush Hour, it still fell short of the $67.4 million made by Rush Hour 2 in August of 2001.

In its second weekend, Universal's The Bourne Ultimatum earned approximately $33 million from 3,686 theatres for a total of $131.7 million. The film has already made a hefty profit by making back its $110 million budget.

20th Century Fox's The Simpsons Movie, came in third place grossing an additional $11.1 million from 3,552 screens in its third week for a new total of $152.5 million. It has now earned a worldwide total of $342 million, all on a $75 million budget. Incredible stuff.

Unfortunately, Paramount's fantasy epic Stardust, did not fare as well, making only $9 million from 2,540 runs, coming in fourth place.

Lastly, Daddy Day Camp almost didn’t make it into the top 10, only grossing around $3.5 million for a new total of $5 million, as a result of its Wednesday release.

RUSSELL CROWE IS THE VILLAIN IN STAR TREK

As a continuation of the speculation of whether Tom Cruise will be the new villain in the next Star Trek film, it seems definite that the role will go to Russell Crowe.

A couple of days ago, IGN reported that the big name that Paramount is looking for to play the villain role is Oscar winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The site adds that whether the villain will be human, Klingon, Romulan, Vulcan or some other alien species is not yet certain.

This news comes after the rumour that director JJ Abrams was aiming for Tom Cruise to have a cameo role in the film as Captain Christopher Pike, James T. Kirk's predecessor as captain of the Enterprise and Spock's first commanding officer.

Abrams is getting ready to start filming on November 5th with the goal of releasing the movie on Christmas Day 2008.

So, now we know. We don’t have to worry about Cruise any more; the role is now down to Crowe.

JOHNNY DEPP AND HELENA BONHAM CARTER
This is a film I’m looking forward to seeing for a few reasons; firstly the story of Sweeney Todd has always fascinated me since I was younger and saw theatre productions of it in England. Additionally, I am curious to see a new version of the story.

Its line-up is appealing, Johnny Depp is the ostensible fictional demon barber, Sweeney Todd . By simply looking at the poster, he looks like he has embraced his role thoroughly. I can feel his presence through the poster.

Others actors include Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and I was surprised to see Sacha Baron Cohen in there too. It will be interesting to see him in such a different role.

Tim Burton is the director and the studio is Paramount Pictures. Hugh Wheeler wrote the original book but I discovered through research that there is another adaptation by author Peter Haining, a horror and crime story writer who argues that Sweeney Todd was a historical figure who did exist and whose crimes were committed around 1800.

It is this ambiguity surrounding the story that further entices me. I do have a penchant for real crime stories.

The film is based on the 19th century legend of Sweeney Todd and the hit Broadway musical. Sweeney Todd also known as Benjamin Barker returns to London after being sent away by Judge Turpin with the help of a sailor, Anthony Hope. He opens a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pie Shop where she sells "the worst pies in London". With her help, Sweeney Todd sets out to seek revenge on the judge who he believes wrongfully imprisoned him.

Todd, as well as being a barber is a serial killer. His weapon is a straight razor that he uses to cut his victim's throats, often in the barber’s chair. In some versions of the story his lover, friend and accomplice, Margery Lovett, cooks meat pies from the victims’ carcasses.

The film will be released at the beginning of 2008. Here's the poster:

SAW IV - TRAILER

August 11th 2007 09:58
I haven't seen any of the Saw films as I'm too scared, but I'm sure there are many of you out there that enjoyed the previous films. In this fourth one, Jigsaw still haunts the living, forcing them to appreciate life, or face death. That doesn't seem like much of a choice to me.

As a continuation of Saw III, Jeff must find his daughter and escape the building where they are trapped before they both die. After finding another tape of Jigsaw, Jeff realizes there may be a newly added piece of the puzzle that he must decipher before it's too late.

SAW IV will be released on October 26, 2007, so that's not long to wait if you're keen. Good luck.

KIDMAN TO PRODUCE AND STAR IN AL FINAL DEL ESPECTRO

Well, this is different. Nicole Kidman is now turning to directing as well as acting and all in the same film. Sounds hectic to me.

Kidman is going to produce as well as star in a remake of the Colombian horror film Al Final Del Eespectro for Universal Pictures.

Kidman plays an agoraphobic woman who starts to live like a hermit in her new spiffy apartment. As this is a horror film, spooky stuff soon starts to happen. Voices, visions, sounds and a creepy neighbor all make the Kidman wonder what happened in her apartment before she moved in. Ooh, I think I would move out pretty quickly if I were her.

Juan Felipe Orozco, who directed the original, is attached to direct the Kidman version. The script is currently being written by Fernley Phillips of The Number 23 infamy. Kidman will be reteaming with producers Roy Lee and Doug Davison who worked with the actress on another thriller, The Invasion. Kidman is a busy woman and is currently filming Australia in Australia and has both Margot At The Wedding and The Golden Compass due for release later this year.

What a woman she is...

THE NEW PINK PANTHER 2 CAST

August 10th 2007 15:22
PINK PANTHER 2 CAST

Even though The Pink Panther remake with Steve Martin from 2006 was a fairly dismal failure, a sequel is still on the way.

Actors for the Pink Panther 2 have been announced, they include Andy Garcia, John Cleese, Alfred Molina and Aishwarya Rai (who was once famously referred to as the most beautiful woman in the world). All the named actors have all signed on to join Steve Martin in the sequel.

Cleese will play the chief inspector while Garcia, Molina and Rai will play fellow detectives all hunting down a thief of ancient artefacts. Shawn Levy from Night at the Museum won't be returning to direct the sequel and has passed the job to Harald Zwart from Agent Cody Banks.

There is still quite a wait until the film comes out, it's scheduled for release on February 13th, 2009. Mark your calendars now if you're interested, I'm not sure I am.

300 - THE TOP DVD SELLER

August 9th 2007 09:43
300 - THE TOP DVD SELLER

300 grossed $210 million in theatres as well as becoming the top film in national home video sales and rental charts within its first week in stores. I think this is quite an achievement. On the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ending August 5th, 300 beat its closest opponent, Universal Studios' Hot Fuzz, by a margin of more than 7-to-1.

On Home Media Magazine's video rental chart, 300 took the top spot with estimated rental earnings of $11.9 million, compared with $6.4 million for the second-positioned Hot Fuzz, even though usually strong sellers make weak renters. This is a fact I never knew.

This is not to downplay the first-week showing of Hot Fuzz. It grossed $23.6 million in theatres, but after seven days had already earned more than 25% of that in rental stores alone. So it seems it was more popular on DVD than at the cinema, as it debuted at No. 2, with first-week sales pegged by studio sources at more than 1 million units – much higher than expected for a title of this box office.

20th Century Fox's Pathfinder, an action film that made a little more than $10 million in theatres, debuted at No. 3 on First Alert and at No. 6 on the rental chart, with $4.5 million in rental revenue.

On the high-definition disc charts, 300 was the top seller on the Blu-ray Disc and the HD DVD charts. The Blu-ray Disc version outsold the HD DVD edition by a margin of nearly 2-to-1.

Interesting stuff, I would've thought 300 would have more sucessful at the cinema because of the enhanced graphics we have at cinemas nowadays, but it seems people chose the DVD option instead.

MATT DAMON IS HIGHEST PAID ACTOR

August 9th 2007 06:08
MATT DAMON IS HIGHEST PAID ACTOR

Okey dokes, I know I’ve written a few posts on Matt Damon and it might seem like I’m obsessed with the bloke, I’m not...nor do I particularly like or dislike him, in fact I’m quite indifferent, but as he’s in the country at the moment, there seems to be a lot happening around him.

Here’s the scene, as we know the Bourne Ultimatum premiered yesterday for VIP guests at The State Theatre in Sydney.

According to the SMH.com.au, a Forbes magazine survey showed Matt Damon provides the highest box-office return on his salary, more than twice that of Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise. Russell Crowe rates at the bottom of the list. Interesting huh? Poor Russell.

Damon was modest in his response to the survey, explaining that it’s,‘Because I'm underpaid,’ he said. ‘I think they're using some funny math.’ Damon was sympathetic of Crowe’s position, ‘These things are so crazy, because if you had taken the same people and applied the same formula a couple of years ago, he [Crowe] would have come out on top. If you are on the shortlist, you have made it anyway.’

Crowe's last three films - A Good Year, Cinderella Man and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - all disappointed at the box office and earned an average gross income of only $5 for each $1 of the actor's salary.

For every dollar Damon was paid for his last three roles, the films returned $US29 ($34) in gross income. As you can see, there's quite a huge difference between the two actors.

And who would’ve thought that Jennifer Aniston would be named the top-ranked actress, making number 5 on the list with a gross income return of $US17. Woweee. It’s believed that her rank was mostly because of her role in The Break-Up, which grossed about $US288 million worldwide. Impressive stuff.

Brad Pitt was number 2, earning the film $US24 for every dollar of his salary, while Vince Vaughn, grabbed third place with $US21, equaling Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp. "The biggest stars in Hollywood are not the actors that deliver the biggest returns," said Michael Ozanian, the senior editor of Forbes.

The survey found that movies starring Hanks, Cruise and Will Smith averaged $US12, $US11 and $US10 in gross income respectively for every dollar of salary.Funnymen Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey ranked close to the bottom, with Sandler bringing in $US9 in gross income, and Ferrell and Carrey $US8. 'American comedies don't translate as well as action flicks to foreign audiences,' Forbes said. Surprising I thought.

Forbes.com calculates the net revenue for a film by adding the worldwide box office and United States DVD revenues and then subtracting the budget. Who said learning algebra wasn’t helpful?

Well, I’ve learnt a lot from this info, what about you? As they say, all is not necessarily what it seems......

BOURNE ULTIMATUM OPENING IN SYDNEY

Matt Damon's Sydney fans loved seeing the star in the flesh at the premiere of The Bourne Ultimatum.

The Oscar-winner was happy to spend time signing autographs and posing for snaps outside the State Theatre, Sydney before joining VIP guests inside the venue for the special screening.

His media tour headed south to Melbourne today where he'll record a chat with Rove McManus and other numerous press meetings before heading home.

It sounds like it's all going well, I wonder what the film is like? We still have to wait for its release which is on the 31st August.

REMAKE OF HORROR FILM REC

August 8th 2007 01:20
REMAKE OF HORROR FILM REC

Screen Gems have made a deal to remake Rec, a Spanish-language horror film about an outbreak of rabies in Los Angeles.

Oddly enough, the original film directed by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza isn’t even released in Spain until October 23rd of this year.

The US remake is slated to begin production early next year with brothers John Erick and Drew Dowdle writing and directing. The two writer/director brothers’ first film was The Poughkeepsie Tapes, another horror film that debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and isn't due for release until next February.

In Rec, a downtown Los Angeles apartment building is quarantined after a mysterious deadly and highly contagious strain of rabies breaks out. A reporter and her cameraman are among those trapped inside.

Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper stated: "Horror may be waning, but this is such a unique concept that I'm certain it will cut through all the blood and glut of recent horror in the marketplace."

I'm not sure about this one, it sounds a bit dodgy to me.

RUMOUR - CRUISE FOR NEXT STAR TREK FILM

I guess it had to happen, that the loudly-opinionated Tom Cruise gets his oar stuck into a Star Trek role.

It’s still not confirmed but the rumours have risen again. According to IGN, director JJ Abrams is looking to have an A-list star do a cameo in the upcoming Star Trek film. Apparently, he is trying to fill the role of Captain Christopher Pike, and the actor he would like to fill the role is Tom I’m-such-a-tosser Cruise.

Pike was James T. Kirk's predecessor as captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise and Mr. Spock's first commanding officer. Pike was the captain in the original and unaired TV pilot, The Cage, where he was portrayed by the late Jeffrey Hunter.

This isn't the first time Cruise's name came up regarding Star Trek. Last year, it seemed that Cruise might be interested in taking the job, but his spokesman told TrekMovie.com, "That story is not true."

The rumour is not confirmed especially as it is believed that Cruise and Paramount Pictures are not the best of friends after studio CEO Sumner Redstone fired him from the company.

However, in the last few months, Redstone has apparently somewhat relented, therefore leaving an opportunity open for reconciliation. If it does happen, it is felt that a Cruise cameo in Star Trek would be a favour to Abrams and not Paramount.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.....

Mel Gibson

You probably know that Warner Bros Pictures have been trying to bring the fifth instalment in the Lethal Weapon series for a while now, but apparently Mel Gibson is simply not interested. But, now that Bruce Willis has returned for one more Die Hard film, Sylvester Stallone returned for one more Rocky and Rambo and Harrison Ford for one more Indiana Jones, film execs are back in talks with Gibson to convince him to reprise his role of Martin Riggs.

Speaking to Moviehole, a Warner Bros. insider revealed that "there's more 'Lethal' talk. Apparently the whole trend of resurrecting old action heroes, like John McClane and John Rambo has spurred them on. Twelve months after Gibson turned down the offer to do a fifth one, they're trying again.

Director Richard Donner also expressed interest in the project quite recently, having said: "It's up to Mel. If he says 'yes' then there's another Lethal Weapon. I have a great story, I'd love to do it and put Lethal Weapon to bed."

So it seems it’s all down to Mel, it seems everyone else is keen. Maybe he will want to keep up with the series reprisal trend that's happening at the moment.

JESSICA SIMPSON DENIES BLONDE AMBITION RUMOURS

A spokesperson has denied rumours that Jessica Simpson’s new movie, Blonde Ambition will skip the theatres and will be released straight to DVD.

The film revolves around a young woman's (Simpson) unconventional, comedic journey up the corporate ladder while finding love along the way. Apparently the film is a loose reworking of the 1988 Working Girl. It seems to be happening more and more lately that previous film themes are being rehashed in slightly different formats.

A report on UsMagazine claimed that the movie would not be released in theatres, an unnamed source described it as "absolutely horrible" and criticised Jessica's acting skills. No surprise there. Ooops, sorry couldn’t resist that snipe. However, Simpson's representative insisted: "It's definitely a theatrical release."

The film has already been pushed back twice by father Joe Simpson, stating that he didn't like it going against such strong competition. Hmm, isn’t he confident in the film’s potential then? At this stage, Sony Pictures has picked it up for distribution, but has taken it off the release calendar.

So who knows what will happen.....

Here’s a trailer for you to get a feel for the film.......

BILL MURRAY RUMOUR

There are rumours that Bill Murray will play a cameo role in the film version of the classic television series Get Smart, an adaptation of Mel Brooks' hit 1960s spy parody show.

Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is on a mission to foil the latest plot for world domination by the wicked crime syndicate known as KAOS. When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents jeopardised, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has no choice but to promote his super-eager yet somewhat inept analyst Maxwell Smart for the job. Smart has always dreamt of working alongside the robust superstar Agent 23, (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) so is delighted that his dream is coming true.

Unfortunately his dream is not coming true, instead Smart finds himself partnered with the only other agent whose identity has not been compromised: the beautiful-but-dangerous veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). As Smart and 99 get closer to unravelling KAOS' master plan, they discover that key KAOS operative Siegfried (Terence Stamp) and his sidekick Shtarker (Kenneth Davitian) are cunningly aiming to cash in with their network of terror. Smart is given little field experience and even less time, as well as being armed only with a few spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm, he must defeat KAOS if he is to save the day.

From the looks of the trailer, the film has retained its over-zealous humour and excited antics. I’m normally not that keen on film versions of television programs but this one looks like it has potential as the trailer made me smile and that’s a good start.

WE OWN THE NIGHT - TRAILER

August 5th 2007 03:01
WE OWN THE NIGHT
OK, I’ll admit that the main reason this film, We Own the Night caught my attention was because of Mark Wahlberg, I think he’s hot stuff. But I don’t think the film will be for me, but then again who knows, I could be surprised.

The film has received positive reviews everywhere it has been shown, including the Cannes Film Festival. The cast includes Oscar nominees Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix and is written and directed by James Gray, who worked with both Wahlberg and Phoenix on his last movie called The Yards back in 2000.

The story is set at the height of a bloody 1980s struggle between New York cops and a Russian mob that targeted law officers and their families. Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix play siblings in a cop-dominated family, with Phoenix the black sheep who ends up managing a Russian mob-controlled nightclub. The Russians and their kingpin Vadim have no rules of engagement-they will kill anyone to get their message across, including family. So when they declare war on the police, Bobby is forced to decide between his life and his family.

FUTURAMA: BENDER'S BIG SCORE

August 5th 2007 02:32
FUTURAMA: BENDER'S BIG SCORE

I didn’t expect that Futurama: Bender's Big Score would be released straight to DVD. Being an Emmy Award-winning program, I assumed it would be a definite film for the cinema as well as a certain big hit.

The series is created by Matt Groening, also the creator of The Simpsons, and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen for the Fox network. It chronicles the adventures of Philip J. Fry, a former New York City pizza delivery boy after he is cryonically frozen at midnight, January 1, 2000, and then revived one thousand years in the future.

The DVD will be released in stores on November 27th 2007 (in the States), and then will be followed by three other films, “The Beast with a Million Backs," "Bender's Game," and "The Wild Green Yonder." The four straight to DVD movies will be comprose of 16 episodes that will be aired on Comedy Central in 2008.

In February 2007, Futurama co-creator Matt Groening answered questions as to whether it had been revived in episodic or feature-film form, explaining the film crew is "writing them as movies and then we're going to chop them up, reconfigure them, write new material and try to make them work as separate episodes."

If you would like more of an idea of what to expect, this is a quote I found from worstpreviews.com.

"As Xmas 3007 approaches, the 'Futurama' crew must fight to save Earth in an epic battle against nudist alien Internet scammers. When the evil naked aliens launch a cyber-attack on Planet Express, they make a shocking discovery: the secret of time travel, mysteriously tattooed on Fry's buttocks. Using their devious nudist software to control Bender, they repeatedly send the beer-fuelled robot back in time to loot Earth of its greatest treasures. Bender's rampage through history has shocking repercussions when he encounters Al Gore (guest-starring as himself) during the 2000 Presidential recount. Meanwhile, Leela finds true love, a beloved crew member suffers an embarrassing decapitation, and Fry learns deep secrets about his destiny and his buttocks."

BRATZ: THE MOVIE

BRATZ: THE MOVIE

Bratz: The Movie is a feature film based on the cartoon characters and dolls of the same name. It is released in Australia on the 20th September 2007 and earlier in the States.

It follows four teenage girls who are from socially and economically diverse backgrounds. They share a common wish to be themselves and realise their dreams and aspirations. They start their journey separated by high school cliques, only to realize that by becoming Bratz, their lives will be more fulfilling. The story is told through an assortment of song, dance, and of course, fashion.

I think this will be a popular one for young teens or should I say Tweens, I’m not up on the ever-changing lingo that accompanies that age group.

I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY

August 4th 2007 00:54
CHUCK AND LARRY

This is Adam Sandler’s latest film. It’s not out in Australia for a couple more weeks but advance screening start on the 12th August.

While researching this film I noticed a consistent level of controversy surrounding it. Most reviews said it’s not as funny as they would like and as the puns often flop. Despite reading these opinions, I noticed on the IMDB website that it is currently second at the box office, number one being The Simpsons Movie.

Chuck Levine and Larry Valentine are fire-fighters who are good friends. However, Larry is a widower (with two small children) and Chuck is single. Sandler and Kevin James (The King of Queens pretend to be domestic partners in order for James, a widower, to list his two kids as his life insurance beneficiaries. As you can imagine the pretence gets tricky with many obstacles in their way.

I won’t say much, feel free to pop back and tell me what you thought if it if you do see it. Here's an excerpt:

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM IS COMING SOON

August 4th 2007 00:23
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM

Aha, it’s time for the next Bourne instalment, The Bourne Ultimatum comes out in Australia on the 23rd August 2007.This is the third film in the series, the follow-up to the 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and 2002's The Bourne Identity.

Agent Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is being hunted by the people in the CIA who trained him to be an assassin. All he wanted was to disappear. Instead, Jason Bourne is now hunted by the people who made him what he is. Having lost his memory and the one person he loved, he is undeterred by the barrage of bullets and a new generation of highly-trained killers. Bourne has only one objective: to go back to the beginning and find out who he was. He knows that in order to have a future he needs to unravel his past.

He travels from Moscow, Paris, Madrid and London to Tangier and New York City in his quest to find the real Jason Bourne-- while trying to outwit the scores of cops, federal officers and Interpol agents with him in their crosshairs.

I only saw the first Bourne film and thought it was pretty good but it’s not really my kind of film. The exotic locations are appealing though and maybe it’s worth seeing for that aspect...

Is anyone planning on seeing the film and waiting for its arrival? Here’s a trailer to give you a taste....

ABBIE CORNISH - NEW BOND GIRL?

Abbie Cornish being the next Bond Girl. Apparently this is not true and Cornish has no idea where the belief came from. Agent Belinda Maxwell stated that, "No, I can tell you that that information is not accurate."

Earlier, the Daily Telegraph quoted Rose Byrne as saying her friend had scored the role opposite Daniel Craig, who will return as Bond. The report said Rose Byrne had divulged at a recent MTV interview. Apparently, "When she was asked whether she'd been contacted about a part in the upcoming flick she said that, as far as she knows, the role belonged to her friend Abbie Cornish."

So, doesn't that indicate where the information came from? It seems to say something to me.

It seems that it's all a bit of a schmozzle. I guess we just have to wait and see - if we care.

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE

Well, I must admit I’m surprised at how well The Simpsons film has done. A popular cartoon does not always translate well onto the big screen. Some of the ones I've watched I've yearned to be watching the telly program rather than the film version.

I'm not a huge lover of the program so I will probably wait until DVD to see it, but it is definitely a clever, unique, witty and humorous program.

In the States the film has been a huge success, scoring the third-highest opening weekend ever for an animated film, with an estimated $72 million domestically from 3,922 screens, behind only the last two Shrek instalments.

It drastically outpaced expectations both domestically and overseas, reflecting positive reviews. It made more than Transformers and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix combined in foreign markets.

Gosh, impressive don’t you think? I won’t be rushing out to see it, I don’t think it’s my cuppa but I’m interested in what others think.

Here’s the trailer if you feel like having a look. Enjoy.

ABBIE CORNISH NEW BOND GIRL

Daniel Craig Is returning to the role of double agent 007 in December 2007 with a new Aussie sidekick Abbie Cornish.

I think it’s an interesting and unexpected choice with Cornish. To me, she doesn’t have the brash beauty that the previous Bond girls had. I see her as having a subtle, atmospheric allure which appeals to me more. I am definitely interested in seeing this new Bond film.

Apparently, Rose Byrne was also back on the shortlist for the new film, according to various film sources. I would’ve been happy with either of the two contenders as they are both talented actors usually involved in challenging films such as Candy and Somersault for Cornish and The Rage in Placid Lake and Two Hands.

Good luck to her and I’m looking forward to seeing it.

MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI'S DEATH

The death of the influential Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni at 94, on the same day as Ingmar Bergman's death, removes another important figure from the European art house scene. But, unlike Bergman, sadly, Antonioni's period of creativity ended long before his actual death late on Monday night.

I didn't see his last film but apparently it was not that great. Apparently, admirers his work winced at his last picture, a toe-curlingly dated and maladroit "erotic" cine-novella in 2004 called The Dangerous Thread of Things and released as part of a triple-bill of short films, called Eros, by Antonioni, Wong Kar-Wai and Steven Soderbergh.

But decades before this, Antonioni created stunningly powerful pictures with inspired images and themes. The most prominent was his black-and-white trilogy of the early '60s, The Eclipse, The Night and The Adventure. These films made a decisive break with the neo-realism of directors such as Vittorio De Sica and Roberto Rossellini; they were fluent, hallucinatory, triangulating a new world between dream, nightmare and ordinary waking reality. Incredible stuff.

His films seemed effortlessly atmospheric, often making their starting point the ennui of Italy's leisured and fashionable classes, but transformed that into a wider sense of alienation, a further questioning of day-to-day existence. At its best, his film-making transmitted a glimpse of what it found to be mysterious and occult forces at work beneath the "real" world.

As his career progressed in the 60s and 70s, he made films in English such as Zabriskie Point, his identity-swap drama The Passenger, with Jack Nicholson, and, most famously, Blow-up, the 1966 film for which he, rightly or wrongly, is most remembered.

What a pity. Does anyone have any films that particularly stand out for them? For me, it is The Passenger which I saw not that long ago at the good old Chauvel.

SICKO - THE FILM

August 2nd 2007 08:03
SICKO
Has anyone seen this film by Michael Moore yet? It was released last week and I would love to hear some responses.

According to a graph displayed in Michael Moore’s new polemic, SICKO, America’s position in global health care is currently No. 38, just above that of Slovenia.

Shocking revelation isn't it? And there are many more in this film, in typical Michael-style film/documentary.

Michael is angry about the putrid state of public health in his home country,
no doubt about that but he leavens his anger with humour and even pathos which makes it easier to watch.

What do you think?

SYDNEY UNDERGROUND FESTIVAL

August 1st 2007 00:27
SYDNEY UNDERGROUND FESTIVAL

Inspired by the feisty experimental filmmakers of the 1960s and 1970s, the first Sydney Underground Film Festival will have four nights of provocative and political screenings when Sydney is shut down for the APEC meeting in September.

The co-directors, Stefan Popescu and Katherine Berger, a promotional flyer that has John Howard in a Nazi uniform has alreday emerged. It has prompted an angry death threat over the phone.

Berger says that holding the festival during APEC is a "happy coincidence" rather than a plan to encourage activism against the event.

She believes Australian films have become too conservative. "Because the industry is quite small, people are always fighting to get noticed. They tend to make films that are following a formula to get funding."

The festival, held at the Factory Theatre in Enmore, is intended to encourage more political film-making - in both subject matter and a more experimental approach. "In Berlin or New York, they would turn their nose up at the idea now of the underground," Popescu says. "But here, we haven't really got a culture of resistance, of subversive art."

Sp far, the festival has attracted nearly 800 entries."We're trying to create a nationwide alliance where we can nurture this culture of alternative films," Popescu says. "Film has been used for really horrible things in the past, propaganda and so forth during Nazi times. I think it can be used for good. "It's relevant now more than ever, with the war in Iraq, that we become overtly political."

The veteran director David Perry, who was part of the underground movement in the 1960s, applauds the push for more political film-making. "I had this romantic notion that underground meant the French underground - fighting the Nazis," he says. "But the younger people saw underground as just being opposed to the prevailing culture [which was] extremely repressive and conservative."

Despite Romulus, My Father centring on an immigrant family and Lucky Miles focusing on refugees, Perry believes many recent Australian films have been disappointing for lacking an interest in politics. "There seems to be a serious degree of conservatism that has crept back into the system," he says.
