SPIDER-MAN 4 WRITER SIGNED

October 31st 2007 12:59
spiderman 4
This period nothing new develops in Hollywood due to the Writer's Guild strike. However Sony signed James Vanderbilt to write the fourth installment in the Spider-Man franchise. Sure, he'll probably not be able to write, but maybe make up a story, etc.

James is the screenwriter behind David Fincher's Zodiac, a quite overrated movie if you ask me. Something that can be considered positive about it though, is the fact that he knows how to create a dark movie. Spider-Man 4 needs dark and therefore it needs someone like James Vanderbilt.

Sam Raimi and the other cast-members aren't certain, but I wouldn't mind if things changed. In a good way of course. Rumors about who the villains will be are already circulating.

Kung Fu Panda
Kung Fu Panda is Dreamworks big animation project for 2008. Their current movie, Bee Movie, seems to become a success judging by all the hype and previews.

Kung Fu Panda has some incredibly big names involved in the cast, such as Jack Black, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie and many more.

The teaser underneath shows Jack Black talking about his "mad" fighting-skills and introduces us to the movie. We get to see some of the first footage yet to be released, and it looks good! In theaters June 6th, 2008.

THE HOME SONG STORIES A CONTENDER FOR AN OSCAR

It was expected that the main contenders for the upcoming Academy Awards were likely to be either Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman or a cinematographer.

Not so, it is looking like it will be Australian director Tony Ayres' film, The Home Song Stories. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named it today as an entrant in the best foreign language film category for the February 24th 2008 Oscars.

In my opinion this seems like a good choice, which is not to say that there aren't many other talented actors or cinematographers out there.

The Home Song Stories is a true story, one heavily burdened with pain and human wandering for a life better than the one the characters were living. Filmmaker, Tony Ayres, bravely delved deep into his past to create The Home Song Stories. As I knew this fact, the story was somewhat more personal and affecting, knowing this was actually someone’s life and not just a story. The film continues to be narrated from young Tom’s point of view and seen through his perspective. The young son’s acting was superb, as they all were but he stood out, probably because of his young age.

The film is cleverly shot in Australia, in Mandarin, Cantonese and English. It is a finely chiseled story of Rose, a glamorous yet unstable woman, who struggles to survive in seventies Australia with two young children. She does what she needs to do to continue to exist. Sometimes that survival barely happens.

This is a film that shows the non-black and whiteness of people in our lives. I felt a surge of various emotions towards the Rose, empathy, anger, frustration, sympathy. To me that show that a film is working if a viewer is affected by the story and having a reaction. It shows how personal difficulties that can be passed down the family line impacting others around.

It deals with mental instability, family relationships and suffering. It is painful tale of passion, displacement shown with an extraordinary honesty about it, an often confronting honesty. Its striking honesty made me hard for me to watch at times, but nonetheless the tale was well-told and deeply affecting.

This is a harrowing story, one with much pain. It was difficult to watch all the characters bounce from one raw situation to the next in the hope that life will get better. There were no scenes of physical hurt, but the emotion agony was strong, at times uncomfortably hard to endure.

The resolution of the film was apt, it wasn’t a tidy Hollywood ending, and it was believable and tenderly illustrated.

The film has already created an interest at film festivals around the world and in Australia, where it recently collected nine nominations for Inside Film Awards, including best feature film, best director, and best actor for Joel Lok and Chen for best actress.

CATE BLANCHETT

I always think of Cate Blanchett as being a demure actor who thinks before she speaks, unlike a lot of other stars around. According to Channel Nine’s news, she stated that she hopes that whoever wins Australia’s federal election in November will disconnect Australia from its ‘embarrassing’ relationship with the US. She further stated that by having this strong link, Australia has forced a gap between them and Asia which she believes is not a wise move.

During this week, Cate was in London for the premier of Elizabeth: The Golden Age, a role that is believed to earn her an Oscar, she told London’s Guardian newspaper that, ‘Whoever gets in will have to deal with this climate of paranoia.’

Now, I’m not judging Cate’s political beliefs, rather noticing with some empathy that being in the media’s strong eyeball can make it difficult to express political opinions without causing a furore. Just because someone is famous, it doesn’t mean they automatically have to be a role model does it?

I might be slightly cynical but my other thought was how this might negatively affect her likelihood of an Oscar...I wonder how long it will be before the next news bulletin announces that she has compromised her chances because of her statements? I guess that is just the reality of being highly famous, as with anything in life, it has its difficulties. Fame isn’t all glory.

BLADE REBOOT?

October 25th 2007 14:24
blade comic
There are only so many stories to tell, at least that generate the big bucks. Therefore Hollywood has started on "reboots" - movies that will be completely remade from point one.

Blade is rumored to be next in the row. I can understand why, it's pretty outdated, but can a reboot or remake change that?

The new Hulk is the movie that will set the barrier, as the first big-budget production to get rebooted. If it becomes successful and people enjoy it, we can expect many similar actions to take place. Another reason for Blade's reboot might be the hype around 30 Days of Night, that also involves vampires and that many critics liked.

Sure, it can be awful and destroy an already bad franchise (that nevertheless has gained cult-status), or enhance it. I mean where's the fault in making reboots in order to improve a movie? I'm glad they make it with the awful Hulk from 2003.

I guess we'll have to wait and see the outcome.

MAD MAX 4 AND HAPPY FEET 2?

October 25th 2007 14:06
happy feet 2
George Miller is the name behind all Mad Max and the box office success Happy Feet. You could say he's very talented, since although he doesn't release movies very often, the ones he does turn out great.

Word went out not long ago that he will direct Justice League of America, and is now confirmed. Miller is actually casting as we speak.

During the production of it, it seems he'll take on the sequels. In other words, he will make Justice League concurrently with Mad Max 4 and Happy Feet 2. Don't ask me how Miller will manage, but who am I to not trust him. After all he must have thought about it in order to approve.

One thing's sure - I look forward to all three movies, a lot.

RAMBO IV - TRAILER!

October 24th 2007 12:37
Rambo IV
Rambo is the topic of the latest headlines, so strategically the trailer of the new film also got released. Just to be clear, the official title is ultimately Rambo, and not "John Rambo" or anything else. I find it confusing though, since it sounds more like the first film in the franchise, so you may see "IV" behind the title sometimes.

Anyway, if you've been keeping track of all the previews, an unrated trailer of Rambo was released almost half a year ago. However, in this one we get to see some more story and cooler scenes with bombs exploding and neck-slicing. Hey, that's Rambo...

You can see Rambo in cinema January 25 and look out for more news on Rambo V

RAMBO V IS COMING

October 23rd 2007 07:56
rambo v
OK, it must look and sound like all I do is moan about endless sequels and remakes but I definitely think I have a point. The next sequel for me to grunt about is Rambo V. Does anyone really think we need a fifth one? Even if a film is absolutely brilliant, five seems awfully extreme and indulgent...to me at least.

Well here’s some actual information instead of me just wittering away. CinemaBlend reports that Sylvester Stallone is already in negotiations to do a fifth Rambo-film, even though the fourth hasn’t been released yet. They are obviously expecting number four to be a success.

The movie will be part of a deal, where Rambo V and another Stallone-film, Poe, are going to be developed for the same production company.

Not much is yet known about Poe, which is also written by Sylvester Stallone himself, but it'll be the chronicles and life of odd writer Edgar Allan Poe. Robert Downey Jr. has been rumored to be Stallone’s preference for the leading role - hopefully true.

As for Rambo V, Stallone might use an alternative script he wrote for John Rambo, which involves Rambo's daughter being kidnapped by cult leaders. So, there we go...

CHILD'S PLAY REMAKE IN PROGRESS

October 22nd 2007 09:03
CHILD'S PLAY REMAKE IN PROGRESS
I only saw a bit of the original film made back in 1988, so I doubt that I will see this remake. I didn’t need to see it; the image of the evil doll is embedded in my mind and has scared me into never seeing the film. I had difficulty looking at the above picture, so I'm pretty convinced this film is not for me.

Apparently, producer David Kirschner, recently revealed there is a Child's Play remake on the way. Eeek. At the moment, the film is "in the works," with a story that Kirschner claims to be "more terrifying" than the original. Double eek.

Being a producer on all five Child's Play-movies, he added that he will once again be involved, in addition to the same screenwriter who has been in charge of the scripts for all the films, Don Mancini.

Currently, there is no director onboard and the story is still in process. Kirschner did state that the plot would be very close to the original film, only with some twists that the audience won't see coming.

NICOLE KIDMAN IS GAINING WEIGHT

October 21st 2007 22:38
KIDMAN PUTS ON WEIGHT
I don’t normally do posts about stars and their weight issues or maybe I should say lack of weight as I think we are already bombarded by the media with their usual guff about who’s lost weight, put it on, why, when, blah blah blah and I don’t want to add to it. But I just read an article saw on Nicole Kidman which states that she is aiming to put on weight. Not for her health, not because she naturally is filling out, or because she decided to oppose the Hollywood standard of skeletal being successful, but it’s for a film. Apparently,’The 40-year-old Australian movie star has already added 4.5kg to her svelte frame and plans to double her weight gain in coming weeks before she starts filming The Read.’ Svelte frame?! As the cliché goes, a picture speaks a thousand words, have a look at the picture below.

My next thought was how she is going to put on that weight. The answer is, ‘she is gorging’. Apparently her gorging consists of ‘drinking daily protein shakes and eating carbohydrates with every meal.’ Does that sound like gluttony to you? Nope, no way. Oooh, evil carbs in her diet? Scary stuff. I wonder how many magazines will have the story on their front cover this week...

Then of course, when the filming is done, we’ll have the usual overabundance of articles on her weight loss, how she did, etc and blah, blah, blah. It’ll be Renee Zellweger and Bridget Jones all over again.

Kidman is playing Hanna Schmitz in The Reading, a story that delves into the emotional repercussions of the Holocaust in post-war Germany.

I'm so pleased I'm not the one making the above statement. You never know what crazy Harry Potter-fans might do to one...

When JK Rowling was asked if Dumbledore finds true love, she said:

Dumbledore is gay. Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent?

What can I say... fictional characters are so modern these days.

When I watched Step Up I thought it would be more than it was, why I got disappointed. Plenty of other folks thought of it as a hilarious and cool film though, why a sequel.

The trailer to Step Up 2 the Streets is available, and it looks better than the first movie, partly because of its bigger budget. You can see when money is spent and when not, and even though it doesn't matter when it comes to story, it does when it comes to quality.

Some Vin Diesel fans are really looking forward to Babylon A.D. We saw a clip a while ago, that was rather entertaining. Maybe not perfect, but entertaining.

Now it's time for the poster, that can be described in pretty much the same way - OK, not great, but OK.

Luckily it's not anything final, more like a teaser poster. Or poster teaser.

I'm Not There has been around for some time, in different festivals and so on, but a new trailer is out that gives us a nicer look at Cate Blanchett's award-winning interpretation. Of course, for me, it'll never be enough until I see the whole film.

I'm Not There is ruminations on the life of Bob Dylan, where seven characters embody a different aspect of the musician's life and work. [IMDB]

Love the idea, love the cast, love the style. Exciting stuff.

STOP LOSS - TRAILER

October 18th 2007 20:27
stop loss
The maker of Boys Don't Cry, Kimberly Peirce, have had a big rest since 1999 was the last year she released a full feature film. However, it's time for the comeback with Stop Loss, a war drama.

Stop Loss is about a soldier, that is back home in Texas after fighting in Iraq, but soon the government wants him out to battle again, which he refuses to go through.

Ryan Phillippe is the star actor, and so far he hasn't disappointed. As for the director, as above mentioned Kimberly, we probably can expect a controversial movie that many either will love or hate.

The trailer got out yesterday, showing some unique storytelling and attractive style. Released March 28, 2008.

AUGUST RUSH - TRAILER

October 17th 2007 20:46
August Rush
August Rush is perfect for people who like good stories and music. I know I do and therefore am excited about this movie.

August Rush is about an orphaned boy that uses his musical talent as a clue to finding his birth parents. Dramas combined with adventure and fairy tale elements can never go wrong. I remember the last movie I saw in this similar genre is Big Fish, which is yet another reason to expect good things (but don't compare it with this one too much).

Freddie Highmore is the lead, and also in the news because of The Spiderwick Chronicles.

"Angelina Jolie" and "photos" are two words very appreciated when combined. These ones are from the set of The Changeling.

The Changeling is about a mother who got her son back after a kidnapping, though it doesn't take long for her to suspect the boy who comes back is not hers. [IMDB]

I love the sound of it and even more the fact that Clint Eastwood directs it. Here are the pics of Angelina Jolie putting her lips even further out than they already are.

JUSTICE LEAGUE CASTING

October 15th 2007 19:47
Justice League cast
Since the news got out that Justice League will have completely new actors in the roles of superheroes many have wondered who that'll be.

Georg Miller, the confirmed director of Justice League, held casting sessions this past Sunday and they'll also continue Monday. Some of the actors and actresses considered are Adam Brody ("The O.C."), Joseph Cross (Running With Scissors), D.J. Cotrona ("Windfall"), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Grindhouse), Michael Angarano (Sky High), Teresa Palmer (Wolf Creek), Max Thieriot (Nancy Drew), amongst others.

For you that even recognize some of the names, you'll realize that these performers are incredibly young, mostly around the age of 20. Truth is, I expected the Justice League movie to have similar style as Batman Begins, but that's a dream that'll never happen. Of course there's not nearly enough info to get disappointed yet, but it has managed to take a step towards a weird direction already.

Now, although young, these are some talented names. George Miller says he's looking for actors to grow into their roles over the course of several movies. He's a strategical player, Miller, so let's put our trust in him just a bit longer, until he announces that Dakota Fanning will play Wonder Woman or something...

There are a lot of stuff that are simply too crazy to be taken seriously, like robot-nannies and flying alarm clocks.

That's why GizmoPeek.com was created. However, it now needs more people to join and write about the gadgets and gizmos that someone never even would think exist.

You should be able to write correct English with humor and wit (the sicker, the better). Not more than 100 words per post is needed, and preferably 2-3 posts per day (not weekends).

As for economy, it's not much at the start, but more than most bloggers out there get from writing every day (which is nothing). So if you're looking to get rich, this will probably be disappointing.

Most of you probably already have an experience with blogging in some extent, and for the rest - blogging can really be fun and profitable at the same time. Especially within the topic GizmoPeek.com handles. You also get a great confirmation on your text through the wonderful comments nice people around here make.

So, if you're interested, apply here.

HITMAN MOVIE UPDATE

October 11th 2007 15:05
Hitman 2007
Soon, very soon, Hitman appears in the theaters. However, before that happens there are some changes to be made.

20th Century Fox, the studio behind it, has taken the project from director Xavier Gens because of it's bloody violence that would've given it an R-rating. Instead they gave it to Nicolas De Toth to turn it into PG-13. It's Die Hard 4.0 all over again.

As long as they don't ruin it, no problem. I mean Die Hard turned out quite alright anyway. After all, as usually an unrated version will probably appear as DVD.

In other news, Timothy Olyphant, who plays Agent 47 in Hitman, said that he trained during 6 weeks with personal trainer and classes on how to shoot with automatic gun. Through this he gained 15lbs of muscle and would gain more if there was time.

As for the shaved head he said:

The costume is pretty cool, but shaving my head wasn't that great," Olyphant said. "But there's something about the shaved head and the tattoo on the back of the skull that is striking. I had to shave it on a daily basis for the movie. Every day.

Hopefully it was worth it. Go here to watch the trailer and see the poster.

spiderwick chronicles
Since we haven't taken a look at The Spiderwick Chronicles yet, I thought it's time for a general update. Some new pictures got released recently and after seeing the trailer the other day at the cinema, just before Stardust, I thought it's worth showing as well.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is based on the popular books by Holly Black, about the twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace and their sister Mallory that find themselves in an alternate world full of faeries and other creatures.

Freddie Highmore, one of today's most talented child-actors, plays the twins, so we get him in double. Other names in the cast are Seth Rogen, David Strathairn and Nick Nolte, although we only hear the voice of some as they play different creatures.

To see pictures of The Spiderwick Chronicles head over here and watch the trailer below.

SLIPSTREAM - TRAILER

slipstream
Few have heard of Slipstream, and until a moment ago I was one of them. This is the very first movie written by Anthony Hopkins, yes that's right, and also directed by him. The cast looks incredible as well, not very big stars but very good ones.

The plot is about aging screenwriter Felix Bonhoeffer who has lived his life in two states of existence: in reality and his own interior world. While working on a murder mystery script, and unaware that his brain is on the verge of implosion, Felix is baffled when his characters start to appear in his life, and vice versa. [IMDB]

Look, I don't blame you if you're completely confused by the above description, but the trailer doesn't make it much clearer either. Slipstream is a very odd, interesting, movie. By and with Anthony Hopkins.

Mama's Boy is the new comedy with Jon Heder, also known as Napoleon Dynamite-guy. I must say I find Jon playing the same role in every movie, summarized by the word "nerd", but he does it so well I sometimes forgive him.

This is probably one of those times. I haven't laughed this much with a trailer since... Superbad, but this contains Jeff Daniels which immediately takes the movie few levels up.

Basically Jon Heder is a mama's boy, that feels threatened when his mother falls in love and wants to marry. "My mom is not big enough for the two of us."

Valkyrie, which takes place during WWII, is directed by Bryan Singer (Superman Returns). Hopefully this time it won't be a disappointment. With Wall-E Disney teams up with Pixar again, which is a big bonus. Disney proved they still got it with the amazing animated film Meet the Robinsons this year.

The trailer for Wall-E is just amazing even though half of it is Pixar's opening segment, a cute one I would say.
