AKIVA GETS 4 MILL. FOR DAN BROWN'S NEXT
November 23rd 2006 23:14
All of you who like Akiva Goldsman raise your hand! Oh, you're so mean!
No you're right, he isn't good, actually he is way overrated. I should know, I'm a screenwriter. I'm not saying he's bad, or useless, cause David Koepp is even more overrated. Akiva is just the guy that shouldn't get to write movies that can easily be screwed, like a Dan Brown adaptation.
But you know what, Hollywood lets him to do that, and not only lets him, but pays him more than I'll ever get! $4.000.000 (that's four million dollars) is his income to create the script for Dan's next book, "Angels & Demons". Is that because "The DaVinci Code" became such a hit? I don't think so.
Akiva is what I would like to call a real craftsman. You see, there are two types of writers, the Artist and the Craftsman. The first one creates beautiful movies with beautiful pictures and beautiful execution, aka Charlie Kaufman. The craftsman takes an assignment, uses his imbedded template and do whatever the studio asks him to do, and hopefully good.
I'm not saying to be a craftsman is bad or not good, just telling you the difference.
So, I guess this time I won't be going to the cinema in order to see Robert Langdon's continued adventures...

(if you don't vote "Angels & Demons" will be similar to "The Davinci Code")

Maybe they are to proud to see their unsuccessful first film?

That being said, I don't think they did a bad job. They just didn't do a good job. It was mediocre at best.
But, I really like Angel's and Demons. It's my favourite Dan Brown book of all. (possibly because I read it first and hadn't yet figured out his formula.....once you've read 2 Dan Brown books you can pick exactly who the bad guy is going to be by about page 10....sometimes it doesn't even take that long. Doesn't matter, I still enjoy it).
But I really don't see why they're doing this. You do a mediocre job on the first movie and then get rewarded for that by doing a second one???? Where's the incentive to excel or do something different?
Damn.

Yes, it's totally illogical to why they're doing this. If the next movie is mediocre again, I hope they won't be so arrogant again.
As for Davinci... I didn't like it, ok, it was “watchable”, but really nothing special. I mean, and I like adaptations. This was simply put... bad.
