JAVIER BARDEM PULLS OUT OF ‘NINE’
May 5th 2008 22:31
A while ago I did a post on Nine, the musical loosely based on Federico Fellini's 81/2. The film tells the story of the director and the women in his life. Nicole Kidman was to be joined by Javier Bardem creating an appealing cast and film premise.
Unfortunately, Bardem has decided to decline the role due to exhaustion and the busy awards season following the massive success of, ‘No Country for Old Men.’ Variety reported that he is aiming to take a year off work to recuperate and rest.
Bardem was to play the lead role of director Guido Contini in the adaptation of the 1982 Broadway hit. Rob Marshall from Chicago fame will be leading the project. Variety also reports that Book writer Arthur Kopit and Yeston will be credited as executive producers. Penelope Cruz (Volver) is believed to have the role of Guido’s mistress, Carla while Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) will play his wife, Carla.
Hopefully after a break we’ll see Bardem back on the silver screen soon.

I had no idea there was a Broadway musical called Nine. Technically it should be written as 9 ... but that's just me being pedantic
