KIDMAN’S NEW FILM DECLARED A FLOP

KIDMAN’S NEW FILM DECLARED A FLOP

Nicole Kidman’s new science fiction thriller, The Invasion, crashed at its debut in US and Canadian cinemas. The Invasion is a re-make of the 1956 horror classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It finished a poor fifth place, earning only $US6 million ($A7.53 million) on its first weekend.

Additionally, it was savaged by critics, one saying, "In the fourth and by far the worst screen version of The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Nicole Kidman's character struggles to stay awake - as will the audience." Wrote New York Post critic Lou Lumenick.

Not much fun for Nic, I wouldn’t say that she would be used to film flops.

The sluggish launch, essential to the film's financial success, did not come close to paying for Kidman's reported $US17 million fee to make the movie. Eeeek.

The film that beat The Invasion by attaining the number one spot was the teen comedy Superbad, the latest hit from Hollywood's new golden boys, Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen, whose recent successes included Knocked Up and 40-Year-Old Virgin. In second place was Rush Hour 3 earning $US21.8 million, The Bourne Ultimatum was third with $US18.9 million. In its sixth week, The Simpson's Movie, added another $US6.65 million to its kitty.

The Invasion, which also stars the new James Bond, Daniel Craig, is scheduled to open in Australia on the 6th September. I wonder what Australia will think of the film? Sometimes I think audiences are just too tired of remakes of old classics. What’s wrong with making original films these days?

Maybe if she could express herself using her face people would enjoy her performance more?

Just a thought.....

Cheers

I don't know if it's wood as much as botox.....she looks permanently kind of cranky these days, almost witchy with the way her eyebrows are stuck.

Shame really, cos she was good at using the muscles before they became paralysed!!!

Yes, I think she looks odd too, maybe it is too much botox? I think you're right, she is so expressionless now and slightly scary.

I'm with you on that, tracy. what happened to the good ORIGINAL movies? it seems like everything these days is either a tv show turned into a movie, a sequel of some kind, or a remake of an old one. even big movies like the Departed are a remake- and that original was only, what, three years old? come on hollywood...pur your thinking caps on, right?

Hi Logan

Ah yes, that's true about The Departed. Quite a few people have commented on this blog that they are tired of remakes.

Exactly:

it seems like everything these days is either a tv show turned into a movie, a sequel of some kind,

Thank goodness for the non-typical Hollywood films that independent cinemas show and concentrate on.

Thanks for your comments,

Tracy

The spate of Hollywood remakes reflects the sad loss of imagination and originality in the American film industry. You just can’t improve on the classics and to try and duplicate a classic film in the hope that you improve the original is just a cop-out.

Hollywood has never really tired to do much original for a long time. Don't look for originality from Hollywood, look elsewhere and wait for Hollywood to make a bigger budget mainstream version of it.

Its all about the money. You can easily predict a plot if you first remember that every single line in a movie costs money,

HI CarlCan

I agree, it just seems like an epidemic doesn't it?

Hi Jaz

It’s a pity isn’t it? Obviously some great films come from Hollywood which can’t be discounted but it seems we’re going through an unimaginative stage which I think is a shame. We need more original films....
