LEO VS LEO VS MATT VS MATT
November 23rd 2006 12:02
Golden Globe is approaching and we will soon follow the second largest film "festival" from this year. The first is the Oscars.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays some amazing roles in "The Departed" and "Blood Diamond". I mean have you seen "The Departed"? Probably one of the greatest this year. And I mean, have you seen "Blood Diamond’s” trailer? Leo tries to speak with an African accent, and he succeeds pretty darn good!
Then we have Matt Damon. Matt also played in "The Departed" and was just as amazing as Leo, and then had the role in "The Good Shepherd" with DeNiro. I haven't seen this Shepherd-movie, but it looks cool, about spies and all.
Anyhow, would you like to know the fun part? BOTH are nominated for best LEAD on ALL four movies. Huh! In other words, Leo is nominated for "The Departed" AND "Blood Diamond", and Matt for "The Departed" AND "The Good Shepherd".
The studios didn't want Matt and Leo to be seen as the lead actors in "The Departed", but Golden Globe seems to differ. Good thing Jack Nicholson "only" gets a supporting role then...
In the Oscars if you're nominated for two different roles, only your most popular one counts, see the rule here.
Others that are in the supporting race are Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett from "Babel", and Jennifer Hudson from "Dreamgirls". I like.
Now that i think of it, this year has been good. Very good.

Joseph Gordon Levitt in Brick would be the best male perfromance of the year for me.
Aaron Eckhart in Thank You for Smoking.
I might come back later and give it more thought and chuck ina few females..
Wasnt impressed by Leo (Whats Eating Gilbert Grape) or Matt in The Departed.

I personally preferred Children of Men - that deserves to be movie of the year. The long shots, the extreme realistic violence, the steady plot, and the first good major role that Clive Owen has ever had. He actually acts in that movie, not to mention Michael Caine's brilliant acting and the whole storyline.
Edit: How could I forget Thank You For Smoking? I love those sort of cynical films, mockumentaries and the like. Speaking of which, mockumentaries seem to be the new trend in film - Thank You For Smoking, Death of a President, and even Lord of War to an extent. It's a great film style.

Joseph Gordon sure was good, but I'm under the impression that he acted a bit cold... You know, without expression, just walked around and tried to be cool. Although he certainly was better than a lot of performances this year.
On the other hand, Aaron, there we got a great performance. I loved the movie, and he was the main reason. Great great great!
Look, we can't ever await for Leo to beat his performance in "What's eating Gilbert Grape", cause he never will. However he is a good actor, and I'm looking forward to see him in "Blood Diamond". I think he'll be even better of in it than in "The Departed".

same here. I love Scorse's work, but it's like he tries to ruin it on purpose. If he makes the best movies like that, think of what he can create with a few adjustments!
Haven't seen “Children of Men”, but certainly will as soon as possible. I always thought of Clive as a good actor.
Like I said, I loved “Thank You for Smoking”, and also think mockumentaries can be great and hilarious at the same time. I want more of them!
