PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END - REVIEW ROUND UP

May 22nd 2007 11:35
Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End

With the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End approaching maybe we should prepare our expectations a bit. Not many reviews are available, but we can get started and maybe add with time.

First the plot: Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle. [IMDB]

Basically, it seems like an improvement from the previous, second, installment. However Cinema Blend don't think it's a huge one.

Jack Sparrow
It seems like Jack Sparrow doesn't have a special purpose other than being dragged around to lighten up the environment. Of course, Sparrow is still a great character and Johny Depp plays him brilliant as always, but unlike the first film the adventure in his own storyline isn't quite visible.

Thankfully we got Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), that shares the real feeling of what a pirate is all about. Keith Richards is also seen during few scenes, being an old experienced pirate, and he does that with great success.

Unfortunately there's a mistake a lot of big movies do (lately Spiderman 3) and that's the multiple storylines. If they're too many we a) loose track and b) we never really get involved with any of them. Urban Cinefile thinks it's what happened, stating in their review:

Clocking in at 168 minutes, Gore Verbinski's third film based on Disney's spectacular Pirates of the Caribbean theme ride is blatantly self-indulgent as a muddle of 15 stories swirl together like an impressive whirlwind whipping up flashes of brilliance amid the chaos. The film is a bit like a journey on a tempestuous ocean with mountainous highs and fathomless lows. I was confused, enthralled, dazzled and bored.

Of course we'll still enjoy the movie, because of it's dazzling visuals, effects and solid performances. Every single actor does a great job keeping the character believable and true to the pirate-theme.

All in all, there's a bit for everyone in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - adventure, action, comedy, romance, drama... Whether you're young or grown it will be a thrilling ride. Recommended cinema viewing.

7/10

UPDATE: Pretty much every other review I read agrees with the above, so there's no need to add something. If you still want to read more, here are few: Variety | LA Times | NY Post

It's going to be interesting, as I thought the first movie was just great, second one waffled on too much and tried too many things and the comedy parts dragged on too long and slowed the movie down, so lets hope this is better than the second??

Hi Peeker,

I'm with Nood...

wow : 15 plots?

That sounds like loop-de-loops on the roller coaster, doesn't it.?.. I bet you get to hang upside down for a little while too *glee*

can't wait.

Lilla,

Nood sums it up pretty well indeed. You will enjoy the ride, but get a bit confused at the same time.

Maybe even get a bit sick because of all the loops =)

I absolutely love all the Pirate movies and At World's End was exactly what I expected. I guess I don't understand why the critics continually pick these movies apart as if they're supposed to be some kind of socially relevant event. If you want entertainment that's going to make you lose some sleep over how disturbing it is -- just watch the news every night. Reality is hard enough to deal with on a regular basis.

It's pure fun and entertainment. It's based on a Disney ride -- for *@&/'s sake. This is total fantasy -- with dastardly pirates -- some who have a glimmer of morals and ethics at the most surprising of times. Keith Richards couldn't have been any better in his cameo. Johnny and his band of pirates and characters have some fun with slapstick and great one-liners. That's all it's supposed to be. Talk about not being in reality -- look how much power they gave Elizabeth and Calypso in this movie. They kicked some butt.

Fantastic special effects. If you like fun -- Pirates are for you. If you want realistic drama and want to come out bawling -- go see something else. It seems pretty simple to me.

Thought it was great! I'm planning on going to watch it again
There's a lot of things that happen which I didn't expect at all.
Thought the way it was handled was interesting with so many stories going on and all linking at the end.
The ending looks like the start of another story lets hope theres a 4th!

Would definately recommend it!

Well, there are definitly some interesting oppinions but let me be the first to say that the movie was a little overhyped. I think the problem was that I went to see Spiderman 3 first and that was everything I expected and more. So I was expecting the 3rd Pirate's installment to do the same.
In short it was kind of a letdown. I'm a big action fan and it seemed like the story's potential was being wieghed down by the rush of a conclusion for Will and Elizabeth's sappy love story. Captain Jack (as always) is what I really went for, and it just seemed like there wasn't enough of him. It just seemed like everyone elses story overshadowed his. The movie did a good job of introducing potentially awesome new characters, like Captain Sparrow's dad and the goddess Calypso, but then letting them turn out to be nothing special. I don't know about anyone else but I was expecting a huge wipeout at the end where the freed goddess chose a side and ravaged the other with her awesome and mighty powers. But dissapointment sank in soon after as I realised she wasn't making another appearance and that I'd sat through a 3 hour movie that I expected so much more from and got a jumble of plots, many of which, had no real conclusion.

It was a good movie. I just should have waited for the DVD.

This movie had numerous sub-plots swirling about. This movie drifted along with no steady plot to travel in any meaningful direction. After 168 minutes adrift you'll be happy to see land.

[/B] I loved the film - and who wants to watch a simple one plot anyway? Being a HUGE fan of the first two, I was rather excited to see what the third would bring and was not disappointed! With its many twists and unpredictable turns, along with the humerous one-liners I was fully entertained and could not help being entrawled with this (dare I call it) EPIC film! It provided everything that I believe a great storyline should: tears, comedy, unpredictability, romance, adventure and action! 10/10! Savvy?! lol! [/B]

Amazing film! I saw it the day after it released, and was not dissapointed at all.
I was dissapointed with all the negative reviews that I was seeing online but of all the people I talked to, POTC3 got a thumbs up.

This movie is sooo bad that after you get over the initial cringing, it actually becomes funny. If you can laugh at bad movies then you can laugh during this. When I saw the "fight/marriage" scene I couldn't help but burst out laughing at what people reading the screenplay must have thought. Its like something a drunk 5 year old would have come up with. Its is sooo stupid its hilarious. Possibly one of the worst movies I've seen in my life. I even think ATOR the Invivible or Wizards of the lost kingdoms is better than this.

haha whatever. Great movie, not as good as the first 2, but deff worth watching again, and buying the DVD. people need to not get caught up on fickle subjects, and just enjoy a movie.

[COLOR=Teal]yeah i liked the movie! there were alot of plot lines, and they didnt have enough fighting scenes...to me...compared to the second installment. I loved it though! the writers did a GREAT job, and ofcourse, so did Mr. Depp, Bloom and Knightley. I didnt really get Jack's part in the film, but I think it has something to do with him being very afraid of death. I wasnt able to stay after the credits. oh well. maybe I'll see it when the dvd comes out.....i hope there's a pirates 4, with all the characers, and maybe a way to get Will out of being the immortal captain of the Flying Dutchman, doomed to be away from his love FOR TEN WHOLE YEARS not to mention his son, i think, my friend said there was a part with him having a son. supposed to be William Turner III, is this true? by the way, I am twelve years old! just so u kno.

ummm. yeah, this is my second comment. heh heh. didnt say all i wanted to in the first one...I AM MAD AT THE CRITICS! I mean, they tried hard, and all they do is point out the bad stuff and make it all worse. Who cares anyway? If viewers like the movie, they like the movie!!! so to all of you who are complaining about the movie. SHUT THE **** UP! okay? so what if we go to a movie before reading those stupid reviews. its only like 7 dollars! I just want u all to know that I am deff not gonna be a critic when I grow up! .......sorry...ima die hard pirates fan.....hope they make a third movie, I've already got a plot. WILL 3 GETS KIDNAPPED! yup, that'll bring in the crowds.

Capt. Teague should have a more important role. Will and Lizzie needed a better conclusion. Jack Sparrow is a perfect as always, except for his plotline. I think the movie should not have had anything to do with "nine pieces if eight" or "the brethren court" and absolutely NOTHING to do with Norrington! I cant believe he kissed her! great, now Will will think Lizzie love Norrington...but then again, he's dead. in shoulda been just GoodGuys (Jack, Will, Liz & co.) vs. Jones vs. East India Company. yup, I think i'm ready to leave this site. good day to you all.

Hey JackSparrowLover aka Lilly,

I'm glad you liked it. If people like movies, it's positive. But the fact remains that a lot of people aren't thrilled with this third installment.

I think this is one of those cases where the critics are absolutely correct. They didn't say it's awful, just that it's kinda dragged and confusing. A lot of meetings and pacts too.

Have a good one,

peeker

I agree. No matter how hard you try, you cant seem to follow the plot. There are about 100 plots going on for every character. And by the end I didnt care whether or not Will and Elizabeth got together. Their love story fizzled out by the middle of the film and then all of a sudden they're getting married? And what was Disney thinking with all of the gore?? I will never let my children see that!! Even I couldnt look when Davy Jones started digging his tenticles into someones head. The first two movies were amazing and hopefully the 3rd will improve with several viewings but it's not worth 10 bucks in the theatre and all I have to say is booooo.

I think the movie was awesome!! So what if the critics think it was horrible. I mean they were picking out the tiny details that noone else noticed like that people's real fingernails were showing under the fake dirty ones!! Come on have a little fun with your life and don't be so... critical!! I'm just trying to say that I think this movie was the best out of the three. I thought it was quite easy to follow even with its many plotlines, which is probably because I was watching and listening instead of talking with my friends the whole time(if you know what I mean). Anyway, I am planning on going to see this awesome movie again with my best friend soon, and we will have the time of our lives laughing at the humor in the movie and at how well it is played.

A Huge Disappointment.

This movie sent me and two other people I was with to sleep- I mean literally! That's out of the five of us, all of us like different films- but still really enjoyed the previous two.

There was barely anything funny or even amusing in it, everything was ridiculous and at times chaotic. Even before I fell asleep I was getting twitchy. It's boring to watch. It's a real, real shame because I was expecting something spectacular. All that random crap with the crabs and hallucinations was tedious. The movie is bouncing around as if it's not sure where to go next.

The fact that the navy gave up after just one of their ships is destroyed is practically insulting. "What shall we do Captain??...Captain?!" Attack back you Idiots! I was glad to see that guy die, what a useless character. His ship was blown apart in a nice flying mess of wood and iron, I think that was the only scene I enjoyed.
