PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END - REVIEW ROUND UP
May 22nd 2007 11:35
With the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End approaching maybe we should prepare our expectations a bit. Not many reviews are available, but we can get started and maybe add with time.
First the plot: Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle. [IMDB]
Basically, it seems like an improvement from the previous, second, installment. However Cinema Blend don't think it's a huge one.
It seems like Jack Sparrow doesn't have a special purpose other than being dragged around to lighten up the environment. Of course, Sparrow is still a great character and Johny Depp plays him brilliant as always, but unlike the first film the adventure in his own storyline isn't quite visible.
Thankfully we got Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), that shares the real feeling of what a pirate is all about. Keith Richards is also seen during few scenes, being an old experienced pirate, and he does that with great success.
Unfortunately there's a mistake a lot of big movies do (lately Spiderman 3) and that's the multiple storylines. If they're too many we a) loose track and b) we never really get involved with any of them. Urban Cinefile thinks it's what happened, stating in their review:
Clocking in at 168 minutes, Gore Verbinski's third film based on Disney's spectacular Pirates of the Caribbean theme ride is blatantly self-indulgent as a muddle of 15 stories swirl together like an impressive whirlwind whipping up flashes of brilliance amid the chaos. The film is a bit like a journey on a tempestuous ocean with mountainous highs and fathomless lows. I was confused, enthralled, dazzled and bored.
Of course we'll still enjoy the movie, because of it's dazzling visuals, effects and solid performances. Every single actor does a great job keeping the character believable and true to the pirate-theme.
All in all, there's a bit for everyone in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - adventure, action, comedy, romance, drama... Whether you're young or grown it will be a thrilling ride. Recommended cinema viewing.
7/10
UPDATE: Pretty much every other review I read agrees with the above, so there's no need to add something. If you still want to read more, here are few: Variety | LA Times | NY Post

Nood sums it up pretty well indeed. You will enjoy the ride, but get a bit confused at the same time.
Maybe even get a bit sick because of all the loops =)

It's pure fun and entertainment. It's based on a Disney ride -- for *@&/'s sake. This is total fantasy -- with dastardly pirates -- some who have a glimmer of morals and ethics at the most surprising of times. Keith Richards couldn't have been any better in his cameo. Johnny and his band of pirates and characters have some fun with slapstick and great one-liners. That's all it's supposed to be. Talk about not being in reality -- look how much power they gave Elizabeth and Calypso in this movie. They kicked some butt.
Fantastic special effects. If you like fun -- Pirates are for you. If you want realistic drama and want to come out bawling -- go see something else. It seems pretty simple to me.

There's a lot of things that happen which I didn't expect at all.
Thought the way it was handled was interesting with so many stories going on and all linking at the end.
The ending looks like the start of another story lets hope theres a 4th!
Would definately recommend it!

In short it was kind of a letdown. I'm a big action fan and it seemed like the story's potential was being wieghed down by the rush of a conclusion for Will and Elizabeth's sappy love story. Captain Jack (as always) is what I really went for, and it just seemed like there wasn't enough of him. It just seemed like everyone elses story overshadowed his. The movie did a good job of introducing potentially awesome new characters, like Captain Sparrow's dad and the goddess Calypso, but then letting them turn out to be nothing special. I don't know about anyone else but I was expecting a huge wipeout at the end where the freed goddess chose a side and ravaged the other with her awesome and mighty powers. But dissapointment sank in soon after as I realised she wasn't making another appearance and that I'd sat through a 3 hour movie that I expected so much more from and got a jumble of plots, many of which, had no real conclusion.
It was a good movie. I just should have waited for the DVD.

I was dissapointed with all the negative reviews that I was seeing online but of all the people I talked to, POTC3 got a thumbs up.

Did not maintain the quality of the previous two films.

I'm glad you liked it. If people like movies, it's positive. But the fact remains that a lot of people aren't thrilled with this third installment.
I think this is one of those cases where the critics are absolutely correct. They didn't say it's awful, just that it's kinda dragged and confusing. A lot of meetings and pacts too.
Have a good one,

This movie sent me and two other people I was with to sleep- I mean literally! That's out of the five of us, all of us like different films- but still really enjoyed the previous two.
There was barely anything funny or even amusing in it, everything was ridiculous and at times chaotic. Even before I fell asleep I was getting twitchy. It's boring to watch. It's a real, real shame because I was expecting something spectacular. All that random crap with the crabs and hallucinations was tedious. The movie is bouncing around as if it's not sure where to go next.
The fact that the navy gave up after just one of their ships is destroyed is practically insulting. "What shall we do Captain??...Captain?!" Attack back you Idiots! I was glad to see that guy die, what a useless character. His ship was blown apart in a nice flying mess of wood and iron, I think that was the only scene I enjoyed.
