ROBERT DOWNEY JR. ON IRON MAN

May 14th 2007 21:46
Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. had an interview recently with Time Out Abu Dhabi and shared his thoughts about Iron Man.

It's pretty interesting, but here's what he says specifically about Iron Man:

I went after it. I hunted it down. I am a fan of the comic book. It’s mythology. Stan Lee created the character on a dare to see if he could make a wealthy, establishment, weapons manufacturing, hard drinking, womanising p**** into someone who is likeable and a hero. And I definitely have had to overcome certain perceptions. But I know underneath it, my heart is in the right place. And that’s kind of what the movie is about.

Unlike so many other superhero movies that something amazing happened to them or they were traumatised by bats or something that justifies why they have a transformation, he’s a guy. He’s a guy who has to do extraordinary things. That’s why I love Die Hard and The Matrix. Deep down I’m a big nerd for superhero movies.

I don't know why, but I have greater expectations about this than I've had in a long time. Well actually I do know why - Robert Downey Jr. and Iron Man are generally as cool as me.

Having just seen the movie, this is what I came away with:

I agree. This is the story of Robert Downey Jr. if he were a superhero. Stark begins as a twisted, depraved, ultra-rich man with nothing to adore but himself. Through a tragic event and a lot of self-confidence and endurance, he saves himself, but the man is forever changed. Now on the opposite side of the coin, truly Stark has become a hero. But, by the end of the film, Stark has not completely lost his cockiness.

That's what happened with Mr. Downey. A drug crazed man driven to the edge who saved himself, yet still has his unbelievable charisma intact. Who could possibly understand IronMan/Stark more clearly than someone who has lived the life?

Mr. Downey is a superhero, he's proven that drugs and drinking and debauchery can be overcome. He should be seen as an inspiration to many people. What more can we ask of a hero?
