SEX AND THE CITY BLITZES BOX OFFICES
June 1st 2008 23:51
Sex and the City has become the highest opening R-rated comedy film ever. On its opening night, it grossed an estimated $56 million, even beating Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. On Friday, the film brought in about 26 million in sales. It is believed that eighty-five percent of the ticket buyers were women and many viewing in groups.
It also broke several another record, it scored the best opening ever for a live-action adaptation of a TV series. Mission Impossible, was the previous winner.
Sarah Jessica Parker, star and producer of the innovative and witty series, said in a telephone interview on Saturday, ‘It is kind of mind-boggling...We are thrilled and humbled that the audience came out.’
I’ll be there next weekend...

In other news I hear this movie was hit hard by critics for being shallow and what have you. Bleh.

But I read reviews saying that the movie was drawing huge crowds of screaming women. Did I miss something? Has this show always been this popular?
I read a quote from a woman who said: "Do you remember when that Star Wars-thingy came out a few years ago? You know, the remake or something? This is like that, for women."
I think I should see this, just to see the reaction with my own eyes. Do I want to pay for a ticket, though?

I don't know that the movie will live up to expectations now Hollywood is in on it, but the series was groundbreaking, for many, many women, at the very least.
On the surface, it may seem all shoes and sex, but it is actually extremely clever, witty, funny, and at the time, very relatable (under the outrageously entertaining stuff). They were ahead of the game in every way, not just fashion and NY hot spots, but all the pressures of modern women. It was a very smart show.
Trace - I'll be there too, I'm sure we will have some sort of connection of the minds as we watch simultaneously!
I had no doubts it would do so well, despite the audience being predominantly women, no kids, not many men. Lots of people may know that it won't be as good as the series, but I don't think a single one of them could help finding out for themselves!

I assure you dear sir, you want to rip your arms out and beat yourself to death with them.
It'll save you the cost of the ticket.

I watched this morning and it was great - and I wasn't a huge fan of the show.
Have posted a REVIEW - with no spoilers
Michaelie - you are so on the money with your comment. After watching the movie I am thinking of starting the TV series from episode one.
Cibbuano - not sure if you will like it, it oozes chick flick but I do love a great chick flick, brings out my inner chick, hehe.

I can't add anything else to your description, it was perfect.
And yes, I think we'll be in synch even though we'll be states apart when we see it!
Thanks for popping in,
Tracy
