SPIDERMAN 3 - REVIEW!

May 5th 2007 23:34
Spiderman 3

Finally I got around to see it and here's the filmpeeker's review. That means there will be zero spoilers and just enough info. Because I said so.

PLOT
Basically Spiderman 3 (or Spider-Man if you're by the book) is a story about Peter Parker's and Mary Jane's relationship. Mary thinks Peter becomes obsessed with all the attention and popularity he gains as Spiderman, which overshadows herself and her carrier.

Then we got the villains. Harry Osborn as the New Goblin, seeking to revenge his father from the previous Spiderman. Sandman, who tries to get money for his sick daughter and gets annoyed when Spiderman intervenes during his robberies. Lastly, but most importantly, we got Venom. Venom is a weird creature, with abilities similar to Spiderman, hungry for evilness.

Imagine all that happening at once in a groovy mix and you get Spiderman 3.

CRITIQUE
Believe it or not, I'm incredibly disappointed. In matter of fact, I wish this didn't exist. It wasn't worse than most comic movies out there, but you expect more from a franchise that has done great so far.

It says action and adventure under "genre", but this was drama and comedy, with only some cool action-sequences. After all, who am I to dislike the effects this film provides?

Spiderman 3 evil
While attempting to create a movie with "brains", they basically ruined a movie with awesomeness. While attempting to be funny, they ruined its believability. I don't think there will be a need to satirize this because it does that job perfectly by itself.

I'm just going to mention one particular part, where Peter Parker becomes obsessed by the black suit, "the evil side". Suddenly he gets a belly, flirts like Dumb Dumber and dances like Mr. Bean. I mean there's a limit somewhere.

Does the "brainy" part works then? No, unfortunately not. There's no deepness or sympathy built around the characters we're supposed to feel sorry about. Sometimes it's even ridiculously sad at parts, but without reason. There's simply no balance.

Certainly, there were some positives though. Well done effects! The Sandman was well executed and so were pretty much all specials. The performances were pretty solid as well, James Franco and Tobey Maguire had some wonderful moments. And it was fun, but I didn't go to watch a comedy. Too much.

Although the movie was generally weak, I don't think it was all Sam Raimi's fault. The directing looked good and the picture was wonderful. The problem, I think, was mostly the script. Why would Sam let his brother, Ivan Raimi, be in the writing team? The guy has made practically nothing before. Keyword: connections.

CONCLUSION
A sad attempt to create the final, as known so far, Spiderman. I recommend a view if you've seen the first two, since it's certainly not un-watchable, just disappointing and ridiculous. On the other hand, if you don't really care, don't bother to visit the big screen. Wait for the DVD or Transformers.

6,5/10

Peeker,

loved the first one, 2nd one was sorta ok, third one? Maybe a bit over the top...I'll wait for the DVD...

No one in my opinion has made a truly sucessful collection of charactors in consistantly great movies since Lucas and Star Wars...

But, I might be a bit jaded lol I had a crush on Carrie Fisher's Princess!

Great post!

Take care,

Nick

You know what Spiderman 3 is? It's Spiderman 2 trapped in a bigger movie called Spiderman 3.

It's a long movie hence theres a lot of 'padding', a lot of extras and way too many bad guys to facilitate the padding.

Oh well, I'll see it when I see it.

i haven't really liked any of the comic to movie adaptations. the only one that i thought was pretty kickass was hellboy but no one saw that.

Stanley,

I feel bad for not seeing Hellboy, it's one of those movies I want to see but never got around to. I've only heard great stuff about it.

I will make sure to catch it before the sequel comes out.

If you haven't seen it yet, Batman Begins also does a wonderful job.

Cheers,

Hi FP,

well, I have to say I was dissapointed too... becuase unlike the black icky stuff, the plot went off course and all over the place for me, and never really ...clung... sure they tied up a few loose ends of which side of the line people were standing on, but left the ending 'like particles in the wind...'

I also recommend people wait for DVD, unless they are rich in time and money. Otherwise, the sequel to the Fantastic Four looked better from where I was sitting.

Yep have to agree FP, 5/10... only went half way for me too.

Hi Lilla,

I'm glad someone agrees with me =)

Well, I can't believe I'm saying this, but FF might even be better! The great thing about the previous Spidermans was that they were both for grownups and kids. This one is more for kids, as is FF, so you never know.

Thanks for stopping by,

Worst movie. Ever. I think my eyes have cancer.

No character depth, no real strong emotions without being cheesy, completely emo and silly spiderman.

No. Just no.

I think spiderman 3 is alright when it comes to special effects,
but out of the two and a half hours, only half an hour is interesting,
the other 2 hours are nothing but them crying and talking.
not to mention that peter looks like a goth when he is under the influence of the black suit.
all in all, the movie is a waste on the big screen but not bad on the small screen if you have nothing to do.
i gave it a 3/5

I thought it was awesome. You haters expect too much. It's a comic book story, its supposed to have lots of extreme emotions. The emo look of parker was short lived, and pretty funny in a cheesy way. If you are a person that likes to hate on everything, don't bother going to the movie or posting. If you are a true spiderman, you've already seen the film and loved it. 4.5/5

Haha..None of you can critique a movie!Just by throwing in themost commonand cliched phrased "had no depth""the characterswereshallow" "they lost the plot" Ugh..It was a 'risky' movie, leave it at that...Sheesh..At the end of the day they're rich and your all in your thirtys and fourties,so automaticallyyouropinion is narrowed down..

I actually like some debate, but as long as we don't attack anyone, but rather clarify our opinion.

The truth is Spiderman 3 was far from good, and I'm not alone to think that. The characters were very cold and we never felt for them.

Then there were major plot-holes, that I didn't mention much, but there's a great post over here.

"Risky" movie? Yea, and it turned out bad, that's how big of a risk they took. Didn't work.

Bleh. I was vvvvvvvery disappointed
For me there wans't half as much action as i wanted to see. The first two pictures had plenty of spidey scenes and tense fights with villains, but the third one simply drowned itslef by making too many characters which in turn created a script that spent too much time on solving the personal problems.
The scene where Peter Parker was walking down the street almost dancing made me cringe. Horrible!

I think Spiderman 3 is as good as the first movie. There are many things going on, way too many bad guys, and it is kinda silly in some parts that are supposed to be funny but overall it is a great movie. Some people say it sucks, I disagree. "Fantastic Four" sucks, "Superman returns" is boring, "Zoom " is a kid's movie, and other movies based on comics are forgotten a week after they're released. Spiderman 3 was a succes.

You shouldn't call this a review of Spiderman 3. Whoever wrote it, is just trying to convince others that it is not worth seeing it. Those who said it didn't have enough action. I don't know what they're talking about. If they want to see more action in a PG-13 rated film, they don't know about the MPAA.

Comment by peeker

May 13th 2007 08:08
The MPAA?? I'm sorry, I should totally consider the rating next time... not.

I wanted to love the movie, but didn't. If you've seen what I've seen you would have looked at it from another point of view. However, you're entitled to your opinion so it would be a shame to not give me that right too.

If the majority agrees with me, I've done a good job. I've done a good job.

Cheers,

peeker

I was impressed with how the script managed to juggle so many characters at once and actually make them relevant.

Truely awful! This has to be one of the worst films i've ever seen!

I get patriotism, but why does spiderman have to land in front of a huge computer generated US flag!!

I also thought the writers were almost parodying themselves when the news presenter says something like 'when we all thought there was no hope...here comes spiderman'.

I loved the first two movies, but this was terrible!

I think spiderman 3 is good , but everybody say Fantastic 4 i s better , i disagree Fantastic 4 is not better than spiderman 3 , FF doesn`t have as much action as spiderman 3 .spiderman 3 is cool but FF is super boring and doesn`t explain why the odyssey gives them powers but in spiderman it explains all.

The fact that Spiderman 3 even is compared to Fantastic Four is evidence of its awfulness.

It's sad...

A spiderman movie (or any movie which claims to be good) should be a ride. You shouldn't get bored or impatient in the middle of it.
With this one you get bored listening to cheezy lines or watching a superhero walk the roads (and actually try to dance) like a dumbass out of saterday night fever.
This is a commercial movie targeted only at capitalizing on the momento gathered from the first two installements.
Forget about the thrill ride.. you may (or may not) have only half an hour of it.

A huge disapointment.

I agree with this critic. I was not impressed by the movie. It did not go with the comic books at all. I think the movie could have been a whole lot better.

Hey I hink taht the movie was great I give it a 9/10 .the only reason I diidn't give it a perfect 10 is because of the ending and teh venom didn't look as good as I thought because you bearly saw his tongue. I mean if he was only going to be in there for 10 minutes you might as well put him in the Spiderman 4 with Carnage teamed instead.Serioiusly I don't know why you people keep saying it sucked it was great and if you guys say that the movie focus too much on the love shit and the drama well if you have ever heard of Spiderman the story is really about peter parker they only called it spiderman because thats what he changes into. You people who criticzes movie is hte reason why they don't make anymore sequel and if you don't stop there won't be a part four.Yeah they tried to put some comedy in there but you have to understand that the movie is also for little kid.I think it was as good as part 2 except for the story line the fight scenes were better. Part 3 was great, acting wasn great, and the villians were great.

Comment by peeker

May 14th 2007 17:03
Hey Jene, your opinion is appreciated.

But I don't say part 3 is awful because of the drama or comedy, but that's part of it. Mostly everything that had something to do with the story sucked. The creation was good, but the story and characters were bad.

well, it didn't gave to my expection to be as great as spiderman 1 & 2. Too long and there's something missing. I'm not happy with the story... i wished that I watched the "Shrek the Third" instead.

Edit this movie down to an hour and 30 minutes, chuck out the Jim Carey moments, shots that serve not purpose and last too long, "AMERICAN SPIDERMAN!!! Fuck Yeah!!!", eyeliner wearing gothy emo spidey and you might have a decent movie. Did kiersten dunst have it in her contract to sing 2 full songs? Ugh...Too bad sandman had no good dialog. His character had a feeling of a tourtured soul but nothing to back it up.

Guess it's like the comics- you have a good storyline and bam! a new writer wrecks the whole thing.

Hey since when do EMOS fight? I thought they just cried and cut themselves?

Seriously though I went soley for the special effects, I wasn't expecting good dialogue which was good because it put the CHEESEY in Cheese.

But the special effects were, well OK, they looked a little too computer generated for me. The fact that inbetween each action scene was another scene of Peter Parker crying about something else (seriously his uncle died when? a few YEARS ago?)

But yeah the top of the cheese was the american flag

Spider-Man 3 was great! It is definitely going to be the best movie of 2007. It had every genre so I don't see why you people hated it. I had a great time while I was watching it in the theaters. All of the people attacking Spider-Man, go get a life. You people expect way too much or you guys just have bad tastes. I give it 5 out of 5 stars! Nuff said.

What have you guys been smoking? You wouldn't know a good movie if it bit you in the ass. Spiderman wasn't acting emo you dumbass. He was simply addicted to the power that the black suit provided him. Fantastic four sucked. You people dont have any inner emotions. If you did, you would have thought it was as good as Spiderman 2. There's an American flag because it's New York City retard. You guys are so retarded you can't even keep up with what's happening in the movie. It was hardly a comedy. If you ever read all the Spiderman comic books, and watched the tv series, maybe you would know what the fuck was going on. All those other super hero movies suck ass. At least Spiderman has some heart to it

I thought it was a good movie but, from all the spider-man comics ive read Venom just isnt big enough. Venom was suposed to be a big football player that was in love with Mary Jane not a news jurnalist that just happens to be the exact size of peter parker (probably the same stunt double).

My opinion: the movie wasn't bad, they just crammed 5 hours of plot points and details into a two and a half hours. Things just felt rushed (especially Venom. He wasn't done justice)

i think Harry's injury would seem more serious if it weren't for the sound effects of what he crashed into. I just cracked up laughing with those combination of sounds.
