SPIDERMAN 3 - REVIEW!
May 5th 2007 23:34
Finally I got around to see it and here's the filmpeeker's review. That means there will be zero spoilers and just enough info. Because I said so.
PLOT
Basically Spiderman 3 (or Spider-Man if you're by the book) is a story about Peter Parker's and Mary Jane's relationship. Mary thinks Peter becomes obsessed with all the attention and popularity he gains as Spiderman, which overshadows herself and her carrier.
Then we got the villains. Harry Osborn as the New Goblin, seeking to revenge his father from the previous Spiderman. Sandman, who tries to get money for his sick daughter and gets annoyed when Spiderman intervenes during his robberies. Lastly, but most importantly, we got Venom. Venom is a weird creature, with abilities similar to Spiderman, hungry for evilness.
Imagine all that happening at once in a groovy mix and you get Spiderman 3.
CRITIQUE
Believe it or not, I'm incredibly disappointed. In matter of fact, I wish this didn't exist. It wasn't worse than most comic movies out there, but you expect more from a franchise that has done great so far.
It says action and adventure under "genre", but this was drama and comedy, with only some cool action-sequences. After all, who am I to dislike the effects this film provides?
While attempting to create a movie with "brains", they basically ruined a movie with awesomeness. While attempting to be funny, they ruined its believability. I don't think there will be a need to satirize this because it does that job perfectly by itself.
I'm just going to mention one particular part, where Peter Parker becomes obsessed by the black suit, "the evil side". Suddenly he gets a belly, flirts like Dumb Dumber and dances like Mr. Bean. I mean there's a limit somewhere.
Does the "brainy" part works then? No, unfortunately not. There's no deepness or sympathy built around the characters we're supposed to feel sorry about. Sometimes it's even ridiculously sad at parts, but without reason. There's simply no balance.
Certainly, there were some positives though. Well done effects! The Sandman was well executed and so were pretty much all specials. The performances were pretty solid as well, James Franco and Tobey Maguire had some wonderful moments. And it was fun, but I didn't go to watch a comedy. Too much.
Although the movie was generally weak, I don't think it was all Sam Raimi's fault. The directing looked good and the picture was wonderful. The problem, I think, was mostly the script. Why would Sam let his brother, Ivan Raimi, be in the writing team? The guy has made practically nothing before. Keyword: connections.
CONCLUSION
A sad attempt to create the final, as known so far, Spiderman. I recommend a view if you've seen the first two, since it's certainly not un-watchable, just disappointing and ridiculous. On the other hand, if you don't really care, don't bother to visit the big screen. Wait for the DVD or Transformers.
6,5/10
Watch the trailer of Spiderman 3.
Watch the posters for Spiderman 3.

loved the first one, 2nd one was sorta ok, third one? Maybe a bit over the top...I'll wait for the DVD...
No one in my opinion has made a truly sucessful collection of charactors in consistantly great movies since Lucas and Star Wars...
But, I might be a bit jaded lol I had a crush on Carrie Fisher's Princess!
Great post!
Take care,
Nick

It's a long movie hence theres a lot of 'padding', a lot of extras and way too many bad guys to facilitate the padding.
Oh well, I'll see it when I see it.

I feel bad for not seeing Hellboy, it's one of those movies I want to see but never got around to. I've only heard great stuff about it.
I will make sure to catch it before the sequel comes out.
If you haven't seen it yet, Batman Begins also does a wonderful job.

well, I have to say I was dissapointed too... becuase unlike the black icky stuff, the plot went off course and all over the place for me, and never really ...clung... sure they tied up a few loose ends of which side of the line people were standing on, but left the ending 'like particles in the wind...'
I also recommend people wait for DVD, unless they are rich in time and money. Otherwise, the sequel to the Fantastic Four looked better from where I was sitting.
Yep have to agree FP, 5/10... only went half way for me too.

I'm glad someone agrees with me =)
Well, I can't believe I'm saying this, but FF might even be better! The great thing about the previous Spidermans was that they were both for grownups and kids. This one is more for kids, as is FF, so you never know.
Thanks for stopping by,

No character depth, no real strong emotions without being cheesy, completely emo and silly spiderman.
No. Just no.

but out of the two and a half hours, only half an hour is interesting,
the other 2 hours are nothing but them crying and talking.
not to mention that peter looks like a goth when he is under the influence of the black suit.
all in all, the movie is a waste on the big screen but not bad on the small screen if you have nothing to do.
i gave it a 3/5

The truth is Spiderman 3 was far from good, and I'm not alone to think that. The characters were very cold and we never felt for them.
Then there were major plot-holes, that I didn't mention much, but there's a great post over here.
"Risky" movie? Yea, and it turned out bad, that's how big of a risk they took. Didn't work.

For me there wans't half as much action as i wanted to see. The first two pictures had plenty of spidey scenes and tense fights with villains, but the third one simply drowned itslef by making too many characters which in turn created a script that spent too much time on solving the personal problems.
The scene where Peter Parker was walking down the street almost dancing made me cringe. Horrible!

I wanted to love the movie, but didn't. If you've seen what I've seen you would have looked at it from another point of view. However, you're entitled to your opinion so it would be a shame to not give me that right too.
If the majority agrees with me, I've done a good job. I've done a good job.

I get patriotism, but why does spiderman have to land in front of a huge computer generated US flag!!
I also thought the writers were almost parodying themselves when the news presenter says something like 'when we all thought there was no hope...here comes spiderman'.
I loved the first two movies, but this was terrible!

With this one you get bored listening to cheezy lines or watching a superhero walk the roads (and actually try to dance) like a dumbass out of saterday night fever.
This is a commercial movie targeted only at capitalizing on the momento gathered from the first two installements.
Forget about the thrill ride.. you may (or may not) have only half an hour of it.
A huge disapointment.

But I don't say part 3 is awful because of the drama or comedy, but that's part of it. Mostly everything that had something to do with the story sucked. The creation was good, but the story and characters were bad.

Guess it's like the comics- you have a good storyline and bam! a new writer wrecks the whole thing.

Seriously though I went soley for the special effects, I wasn't expecting good dialogue which was good because it put the CHEESEY in Cheese.
But the special effects were, well OK, they looked a little too computer generated for me. The fact that inbetween each action scene was another scene of Peter Parker crying about something else (seriously his uncle died when? a few YEARS ago?)
But yeah the top of the cheese was the american flag
