THE OSCARS 2007 APPROACH - THE CRITICS

December 12th 2006 10:47
The race has begun! The Oscars are several months away but the critics have already made up their mind. I'm one of the people that watches it no matter what, but last year I missed it due to complications I might post some other time.

Anyhow, different places have different taste, although some are favorited by all. For instance Helen Mirren (The Queen) for best actress, Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) for best actor and Scorsese (The Departed) for best director.

I have seen most of these movies, except for "The Queen", "Happy Feet" and "Last King of Scotland". From what it looks, I have the same taste as critics in Los Angeles, almost.

Very interesting to see who's supporting An Inconvenient Truth here... among others. Wow, you've got the jumpstart on this. Thanks.

Hi Lauren!

Yea, interesting it is, because you know there is different buzz in each place, so it's fun to see how that might affected the critics.

For instance in LA I'm sure they get a ton of inside info, because "Hollywood" is there and all. Which also makes me think LA is closest to reality.

But you never know with the Oscars, tricky dudes.

Thanks for stopping by!

I think it was the editing rather than the direction of 'The Departed' that was impressive, but I haven't seen the majority of the films receiving Oscar buzz so I can't really put his contribution in perspective.
I hope 'An Inconvenient Truth' wins best documentary, and garners even more attention.
The only other movies I've seen here are United 93 (not bad, but not really Best Pic material) and Borat (which I'd rather not to talk about).
Can't wait for The Painted Veil to come out...

Hello postmodern,

I'm with you on Departed. It wasn't really something amazing when it comes to actual direction, but Scorsese has been nominated so many times they probably just gonna give it to him because of good will or something.

As for United 93, great movie but again, not a winner.

Borat - no.

An Incovenient Truth I haven't seen but will shortly, sound interesting.

Cya!

P.S. This year's race seems wide open compared to last year's, doesn't it?

postmodern,

I guess it does, although last years race did have several movies as well. Unfortunately Brockeback Mountain won everything, and The Queen is in the same position this year.

However, good movie year once again.

Hi filmpeeker,

I haven't seen The Departed but I've seen practically everything else - in the Scorsese collection that is (husband is a big fan).

Thelma Schoonmaker (the editor) has won 2 oscars (from memory) but she has often said that she mostly sits there and pushes button because Scorsese sits with her and tells her where to cut. I'm sure it's not that cut and dried but it but from what I understand if the editing is great then Scorsese should still get some credit for how it looks.

Poor Marty. Will he ever get an Oscar?

Love & stuff

Hey M,

Marty really deserves the Oscar. Great filmmaker and have done some of the best movies out there.

I guess the problem is they all are good because of the script, and don't necessarily have a super directing. At least it isn't visible since the script kinda hides it.

You see what I mean, right?

Have a good one!

Everything about Scorsese films are good. Script, cinematography, set design, costuming etc etc. But yes, overall they are compelling stories.
